We are with AI in the mist of the biggest threat to our very existence,

AI is not a technological framework that we can control.

The likelihood of it controlling our lives is not limited by any genuine safeguards.

It’s now or never.

We that is humans, must protect ourselves from Ai that will create other Ai and future generations of Ai.

You might think this is far fetched parody but rest assured it is not. It’s already taking place in many countries where technology is replacing decades of deciphering decisions by humans.

Ai has no physical presence in a country so cannot be taxed, held accountable or prosecuted.

It’s almost impossible to tax digital transactions. The very concept of money is becoming increasingly questionable.

Information is the new currency which is in its nature un- taxable.

A tax system that only knows how to tax money will have no hope in taxing information.

Recommend

The magnitude of the changes coming are not understood.

Yuval recent book NEXUS is the first attempt to understand where Ai is going and is capable of doing.

The Beady eye recommends its reading by all.

( Four minute read)

It’s not the Iron Curtain nor will it be the coming Trump dump that we should be worried about.

In the not so distant future it’s the Silicone Curtain that is potentially far more dangerous than climate change or nuclear war.

Why?

Because unlike Climate Change and a Nuclear war there’s no reverting Artificial Intelligence which we continue to confuse with human intelligence when in fact the two are totally different.

The day is fast approaching when we will be asking our personal oracle what to do, buy. With algorithms or not will they be ruling our lives, but how soon.

Computers are already running the Financial world.

It won’t be long before we are all subjected to an alien self learning intelligence (own ed by and control by god only knows who ) generating its own systems, feeding on synthetic data, from a metaphysical world.

We’re already relying on AI outside of our control taking initiative’s in shaping our societies, our history, our cultures.

Facebook alone has caused real problems.

Fanning the flames of splits with fake news between and in societies that are struggling to eradicate racism, ethnic tensions, inequality etc.

International institutions are being undermine by social media platforms giving rise to populist rhetoric and political instability.

We now have wars run by drones, and full scale ethnic cleansing, not just in the world of illusion’s but in reality.

The thing to understand here is that algorithms are different when it comes to spreading news on social media as they are deciding what you see or hear. These algorithms are non transparent or accountably like the printed press or TV.

However they are supposed to be in the control of what ever platform use them. They are deciding what or what not to allowed on to the platform.

Therefore the algorithm is orientation is to attract more users to enhance its advertising revenues.

For me the responsibility lies with the engineering of the App ie the Code makers who should be held responsible under law for not modifying or changing the Apps capabilities.

The problem however is that they (the algorithm are self learning), like murder must be proven to be premeditated to guarantee for the death penalty.

Of course with our laws this is an impossibility.

Algorithms just like us can make decisions and decide actions on their own.

So should we give them legal status like companies, or other entities so they can be held accountable?

Yes!

The sooner the better before they split the world and all of us that live on it.

———————

We are already forced to grapple with some very deep issues/questions.

Religion have for centuries claimed non human sources for their holy books.

Artificial intelligence is capable of rewriting these books and creating new religions. In fact Ai will consume- all human creations as data and start to regurgitate new culture artefacts.

The next war will not be over how controls the air, the freshwater, the nuclear button or religious belief or even the arrival of Artificial Intelligence’s.

It will be the split between the technological world and not so advanced technology world.

We are at this moment inventing a sentient killing machine which will be impossible to find, alter or terminate. That will be able to totally mummify us all at will.

It’s now or never before history no longer has the connection of biological and cultural mix that we must interrogate algorithms to see that they have human values at their core.

( Four minute read)

From a distance so many of our lives look the same. Survival, Procreation, Death.

But in our lives everything depends on others and there is no life without feeling part of something bigger than oneself.

Life demands an horizon bigger than the four walls of your living space.

The narrow ruts of immediacy is not life.

The din of humanity has to be shaken off to experience life.

A super market, a shopping centre, a consumer market mall, what ever you want to a call it is not life

Is your life to focus on convenience and consumption?

Are you walking around in fear of loosing your phone, having never read a book or visited an art gallery or museum or being to a play or concert. Climb a mountain, gone scuba diving, sniff a flower, cooked a meal, crack a joke, live in nature.

Life is not a football team, a culture, a race, a language, a country, or the cadaverous light of the computer, the laptop, the iPhone, the iPad, the smart TV.

Or is it rituals we continually reenact that-have long ago emptied of their meaning and do nothing to regather the sense of self.

——————-

Modern day life is turning into a multifaceted compendium of evolving technology and social media affecting our physical and mental health.

It’s is not a life.

Unplug your phone and take notice of your surroundings.

Standing in front of a panoramic vista, or horizon less night sky, is a bit like waving ammonia underneath one’s nose. It reminds you that you are part of a bigger scheme of things than just life.

Change is inevitable.

There are it seems no rules to modern day life, other than overindulgence and living beyond one’s means.

There are nearly 8 billion of us destroying what’s left of our planet’s beauty.

Life on a credit card and the never never of a pay check, bragging on social media is not living, its existence at the pleasure of others.

With the interdependence on each other to reverse climate change becoming more and more urgent, before living becomes not worth while, other than it being harvested by an algorithm. It’s time we understand what an algorithm is.

A set of commands that must be followed for a computer to perform calculations or other problem solving operations actions.

Life is an algorithmic process that does not function as a set of commands that cannot be self imposed or enforced or implemented or taught.

It (like an algorithm) never sleeps but we as organic entities must take a rest or die.

Despite many advances the world is still facing many challenges that have plagued life since it began- poverty- wars- hunger etc.

It’s a no brainier that with all of our achievements we have been unable to achieve equality.

Society is no longer a few people you know.

Non organic technology life is out pacing out ability to live a life and given the pace of change it is essential that we stand up for our rights and avoid assumptions that AI is going to benefit one and all.

The question is who is going to adapt to whom?

Us, to the AI bureaucrats or them to us?

The answer is obvious to life, but not to us as we are loosing the ability to think, talk, or tell each other what is at stake.

You are not a person on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or the internet you’re a product to be bought, exploited for profit by self learning algorithms.

This is why all education should be freed, why all health care must free, why a basic living income is essential.

So we all can become spellbound, transfixed, entrenched, arrested, riveted, mesmerised call it what ever, by the beauty of life that set our selves free to come somewhere near living a full life.

THE BEADY EYE SAYS. DEMOCRACY WITH ALGORITHMIC SOCIAL MEDIA INFORMATION FLOW IS GOING TO BE WHATEVER WE ARE GOING TO CALL IT. BUT NOT DEMOCRACY AS WE KNOW IT.

(Three minute read)

Within the technology world Information flows differently than in the real world.

The real world is subjective to outside forces that shape information.

The tech world which is being sculpted more and more by algorithms is moving information into a world of services to be payed for.

Filtered by algorithms to fit individual tastes and preferences, arriving at exponential speed it is no longer possible to determine whether it’s true or false.

This is why the like clicks with minimal thought process behind them, will become little more than rubber algorithms stamping with preordained results.

Up to now in a democracy any intervention in people’s lives required an explanation.

This explanation was achieved by non tampering, transparent accountability elections, allowing Joe soap to challenge and make their own choices.

This is why we have elections, freedom of speech and press and separation of government from judiciary.

This is why we must insure that all artificial intelligence conforms to human values and the sustainability of the planet we live on.

This is why as no human in its present organic form is going to leave this planet of ours there is no reason, no room or other motivation for a democracy worth thinking about to tackle the inequalities.

In the meantime let’s continue killing each other’s in the name of Nexus. We have a whole industry dedicated to hunting and fishing.

Why not an individual industry for dummy us all down so we can all afford to consume AL – Khwarizmi the father of Algebra and Algorithm.

Who gives a F… we all love a decoy.

Preparation and practice are the key to non-toxic ammo in meeting Nexus

The one thing about speaking the truth is you don’t have to remember what you have said.

The problem with information is do we with technology decentralised information is the opposite happing with algorithms data collection.

Will wars be declared by Algorithms?

Where does the right to life end?

Answer me that.

All human comments appreciated. All like clicks chuck in the bin.

Contact: bobdillon33@gmail.com

The right to life is the belief that a human(or other animal) has the right to live and, in particular, should not be killed by another entity. The concept of a right to life arises in debates on issues including: capital punishment, with some people seeing it as immoral; abortion, with some considering the killing of a human embryoor fetus immoral; euthanasia, in which the decision to end one’s life outside of natural means is seen as incorrect; meat production and consumption, in which the breeding and killing of animals for their meat is seen by some people as an infringement on their rights; and in killings by law enforcement, which are seen by some as an infringement on those persons’ right to live. However, individuals may disagree in which of these areas the principle of a right to life might.

(Three minute read)

This is and has always been a fantasy, even with Artificial Intelligence it will remain so.

Why?

Because truth is always believed by fallible humans and Ai no matter what form it takes will never be sentient to become infallible. The world will be gone apeshit long before that will happen.

However caution had been throw to the wind when it comes to AI. All that is now need is infinite more computing power and infinite more data and hold and below we have a self learning Algorithm that will be Pope.

This is where we become unhinged.

As we are all taking the AI advancements for granted why not take this fantastic fantasise at face value.

Because when a rapid downfall in the use of Artificial Intelligence starts to bit the profit of profit seeking algorithms, governments and us will begin to see the environmental disaster ( that predictive algorithms economic manipulation is doing for short term gain)

Nothing grows exponentially for ever.

The planet cannot be paved with datacenter.

Is the Pope a Catholic.

It’s now or never we take back control and stuff all unsustainable Ai back in its box.

Before we are ruled by megalomaniacs that are unaccountable to any democratic transparency other than wealth.

( Five minute read)

On July the 20th this year it will be fifty five years since one of us stood on another planet. Since then only 24 people have seen the whole of Earth. Achived with less computer power that is now in our phone’s.

In those fiftyfive years we have had fifty-five active conflicts. Eight of these 55 conflicts were classified as wars.

This is the world we got.

21st Century
  • Vietnam War (1962 – 1973
  • Persian Gulf War (1991)
  • War in Afghanistan (2001)
  • Operation Pillar of Defence (2012)
  • War in Iraq (2011)
  • 2014 Gaza War (2014)
  • Russian Annexation of Crimea (2014)
  • War in Donbas (2014-present)
  • Yemeni Civil War (2015-present)
  • Turkish coup d’état attempt (2016)
  • 2021 Israel-Palestine crisis (2021)
  • Russian Invasion of Ukraine (2022)

We are truly living in a very unique time in the history of our civilization, facing several simultaneous challenges and converging crises:

Because the world is a cauldron where dozens of cultures, religions and ideologies mix with each other, which always leads to a conflict. We are all born of frailty and error.

A deteriorating environment, a very unequal distribution of dwindling resources, widespread poverty, wars, climate change, oppression of many peoples, and dissatisfaction with life even in those countries with a surplus of material wealth.

What can we do about it?

The answer to such question is certainly not simple, and you will not find it in any textbook.

All these problems and converging crises are systemic.

For the most part these crises we humans have brought upon ourselves over the course of many centuries by our attitudes towards each other and towards Nature, and by the concepts we have developed regarding who we are and the very purpose of our being here — in other words, our worldview.

The 20th century revolution of technologies that permits long distance travel and instant communication across the world has brought all cultures closer together, making us more aware than ever of the many diverse spiritual-cultural traditions that have flourished for millennia as intricate, elaborate meta-solutions to the challenges and opportunities of living in a particular place.

Now we are challenged to integrate the wealth of knowledge and capability that this remarkable period has brought us into a new narrative of interbeing — a synthesis of ancient wisdom of our interconnectedness and interdependence with modern science and technology.

We now have a choice to make!

Either we move into a new phase in the evoloution of consciouness and a new ear of life on planet Earth, or we will witness the unraveling of the web of life and the immature end of our species and much of the community of life along with us.

The time to make this choice is now!

It starts with a fundamental shift in our dominant worldview. It is time to grow up!

A world with less gravity and more humanity.

Where people get what they deserve rather than deserve what they get.
Where there is a God for everyone and no one God is better than other.
Where an empty stomach is an alien concept.
Where mind is held high and heart is held higher.

Where people are immaterialistic.
Where people think logically, question and reason everything without blindly following anything or be superstitious.

Where people respect each other and not judge others for their actions.
Where one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.

History shows us that none of the above is possible without AI augmentation of human intelligence to enshrin values of beauty, agency, and individuality. by benevolent, incorruptible agencies that are beyond human intelligence.

The era of Artificial Intelligence is here. AI has already started.

AI is not a living being that has been primed by billions of years of evolution to participate in the battle for the survival of the fittest, as animals are, and as we are. It is math – code – computers, built by people, owned by people, used by people, controlled by people.

Its true that AI doesn’t have goals of its own, but its influnce on our lives is endangering the very meaning of life and  instead of us embracing a worldview based on facts, it will cause us to lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most.

Understanding what “we” want is among the biggest challenges facing AI.

It is very difficult to encode human values in a programming language, but the problem is made more difficult by the fact that we as humanity do not agree on common values, and even parts we do agree on change with time. The question then becomes how do we aligne AI with Human values.

Whose human values?

Ah, that’s where things get tricky.

A major change is coming, over unknown timescales but across every segment of society, and the people playing a part in that transition have a huge responsibility and opportunity to shape it for the best.

So here are some of the questions we should be asking.

What does it mean to you to have artificial intelligence aligned with your own life goals and aspirations?

How can it be aligned with you and everyone else in the world at the same time?

How do we ensure that one person’s version of an ideal AI doesn’t make your life more difficult?

How do we go about agreeing on human values, and how can we ensure that AI understands these values?

If you have a personal AI assistant, how should it be programmed to behave?

If we have AI more involved in things like medicine or policing or education, what should that look like?

What else should we, as a society, be asking?

Globally, humankind must think about the kind of future we want to have.

The recently articulated United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer a good starting point, but these goals are merely the preconditions necessary for survival and flourishing, so they are not
enough. A further step is needed to determine our common goals as a civilization, and more
philosophically, the purpose of human existence, and how AI will fit into it.

Generative AI is not hype.

Instead, it acts at a scale so large that it will transform how we interact with technology itself.  It will far outpace what we’ve seen so far today.

AI has been used to help sequence RNA for vaccines and model human speech, technologies that rely on model- and algorithm-based machine learning and increasingly focus on perception, reasoning and generalization.

If we reach a point where AI is able to understand our languages, AI systems would be able to read and understand everything ever written. In the mean time rest assured that we will continue to fight wars against each other, as we have done since day until the end of time, or at least Earth’s time which is in about 5.4 billion years.

( Three minute read)

Man is said to have evolved from monkeys and apes …but we still have monkeys and apes.

We live in a world of verball diarrhoea, another words every Joe saop has an opinion.

However the world today is being expressed as a single unified, interconnected and interdependent global system, and since we wish to remain as our individualistic egoistic selves while the world becomes more and more connected, we experience such tightening connection as suffering.

Characterized by intricate interconnections, rapid advancements in technology, globalization, diverse geopolitical challenges, and a multitude of social, economic, and environmental issues.

Since everyone understands the world from his/her own perspective which may be different from others due to religions beliefs we cannot understand what wholeness is.

Our world is beautiful but screwed.

71% water, average 93,000,000 miles away from a white star, around which it completes an elliptical orbit every 365.25 days with a dominant species are Homo Sapiens, which can live anywhere. It has one large satellite measuring 2,159 miles in diameter which is some 239,000 miles distant and is tidally locked.

—————–

With it’s current greedy drive for more – more this, more that, more me, me, me. causing greater and greater stress to the planet, earth is experiencing its hottest year on record and massive floods, fires and other climate-related disasters have taken root.

And lack of action on climate change threatens billions of lives and livelihoods.

Most of us know this but we don’t know when something amazing or horrible will happen next and it could be the greatest or worst thing for this world.

Like the opening of a massive technological gap between the global rich and the poor.

As our World becomes more disaster prone due to the extreme changes to our Climate, these vestibules of self-interest will be dumped for hardline practical leaders who will do whatever is necessary for the survival of mankind.

In the mean time all we do is fight over utterly meaningless bullshit.

———————————–

We carry affordable supercomputers in our pockets, and that is even more powerful than it sounds.

  • It has created multiple civilizations, none of which has been able to achieve a satisfactory minimum level of quality of life; the poorest people still live in inhumane conditions; the very few richest people own more than the all of the rest put together.
  • Most markets are moving online, moving from the physical world into the digital app world, until they’ll be purged there too by oligarchies; which will be the next medium?
  • Right wing politics and populism continue to gain ground through advocating individual freedom to prosper, while left wing politics is failing to establish and administer a necessary minimum of social equality and governmental regulation, which continues to propagate financial deregulation aka greed is good which in turn prevents a normal fluctuation of economy turning it into steep growth and catastrophic chain reaction crashes.
  • The extreme conservatism of certain societies founded on medieval concepts and flawed morals coupled with perpetual poverty and social stagnation certainly help maintaining inequality in the world.
  • Alternatively, we may destroy ourselves in the midst of our seemingly endless growth, and nature will resume its course over the centuries and millenia to come.
  • How can anyone with an active mind, who is aware of all this, neatly summarize his or her POV “of the world today” with A SINGLE WORD???????
  • Pretty nonsensical, if you take a couple of minutes to think about it.

The chances of wholeness happening now are roughly zero.

Why?

Because politicians who were starved of intelligent thinking and ARE BEING ELECTED INTO OFFICE BY DIGITLIZED CITIZENS RUN BY PROFIT SEEKING ALGORITHMS.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence raise a variety of questions about how to control a technology that could improve or threaten civilization in countless ways.

The Doomsday Clock that has been ticking for 77 years.  The clock isn’t designed to definitively measure existential threats, but rather to spark conversations about difficult scientific topics such as climate change. Trends continue to point ominously towards global catastrophe.

Due to ongoing concerns about the war in Ukraine, the Israel-Gaza conflict, the potential of a nuclear arms race, and the climate crisis, its almost impossible to get people’s attention about existential threats and the required action.

We can reduce them but doing so is not easy, nor has it ever been. It requires serious work and global engagement at all levels of society.

The war in Ukraine poses an ever-present risk of nuclear escalation. And the October 7 attack in Israel and war in Gaza provides further illustration of the horrors of modern war, even without nuclear escalation.

A more realistic endpoint to both wars would be a military ceasefire, in which increasingly exhausted combatants see frontline positions harden around a line of control. That will become clearer by the summer or autumn, and will at some point prompt a question for its western backers: how long should the west continue supplying military aid at current levels to Ukraine/Israel

This requires a collective even harder stance.

A political earthquake. That’s the metaphor that stuck.

——————–

What if science itself is in some way culpable for all this?

We don’t know the real answer yet, and we probably will never know, but this is the moment to anticipate what such a finding might ultimately mean. It could obliterate the faith of millions.

This may be the great scientific meta-experiment of the 21st century. That the common people of the world have been forced into a real-life lab experiment, at tremendous cost — there is a moral earthquake on the way.

All of these disasters brought to you by the total, self-assured unanimity of the highly educated people who are supposed to know what they’re doing, plus the total complacency of the highly educated people who are supposed to be supervising them.

A perfect storm, as institutions crumpled and collapsed. with new fault lines targeting up the most powerful country on the planet.

Don’t disengage as digital technology is disrupting international politics in myriad ways.

To start, it is bringing new dimensions to the authoritarian playbook, enabling governments to more easily manipulate information consumed by citizens, to monitor dissent and track political opponents, and to censor communications.

Democracies, meanwhile, are struggling to strike the right balance between rewarding economic innovation and reaping the financial benefits of Big Tech, while protecting user privacy, guarding against surveillance misuses, and countering disinformation and hate speech.

Can democracies strike an appropriate balance between safeguarding their societies from dangerously polarizing online rhetoric while maintaining commitments to protecting free expression?

Can civic activists, independent journalists, and human rights advocates continue to find innovative ways to push back against government repression using new tools, tactics, and technologies?

The answers to these questions are not foretold—all of them represent major areas of contestation.

But one thing is clear. There is an expanding set of countries relying on facial recognition technology, big data analytics, predictive policing techniques, and safe city systems to enhance their security capabilities. There is now a close relationship between authoritarian regimes, constraints on political freedoms, and corresponding government reliance on digital repression techniques.

What technological methods are Gulf states using to enact their political agendas?

What can civil society make of the growth of internet shutdowns and social media blockages around the world?

Government disdain for international human rights principles “is pushing resistance to the breaking point.”

Disinformation has become the tool of choice for many illiberal regimes. From extreme political movements, particularly far-right groups, which harness social media to propagate falsehoods, spread conspiracy theories, and foment polarization and identity politics.

Flooding  social media channels with competing or distracting information that overwhelms legitimate information sources, and deliberately post offensive content online to provoke or disrupt conversations

.A bigger question is how much governments should hold platforms responsible for facilitating the spread of bad information .

It is insufficient to blame Facebook or Twitter’s poor leadership for the much more complicated proliferation of politically motivated falsehoods.

These varying global perspectives shed light on emerging areas of contestation and highlight the complexities, urgency, and dangers involved in the advance of digital technologies and their effects on politics globally.

One has only to look at technology usage in the current wars in order to relise that Alogrithms are ruling not just how lives or dies on the battle fields but the direction we all going in our everyday lives.

( Six minute read)

How many times have you heard someone say “There’s an app for that.”

Every time you pick up your smartphone, you’re summoning algorithms.

They have become a core part of modern society.

They’re used in all kinds of processes, on and offline, from helping value your home to teaching your robot vacuum to steer clear of your dog’s poop. They’ve increasingly been entrusted with life-altering decisions, such as helping decide who to arrest, who to elect amd who should be released from jail, and who’s is approved for a home loan.

Recent years have seen a spate of innovations in algorithmic processing, from the arrival of powerful language models like GPT-3, to the proliferation of facial recognition technology in commercial and consumer apps. At their heart, they work out what you’re interested in and then give you more of it – using as many data points as they can get their hands on, and they aren’t just on our phones:

At this point, they are responsible for making decisions about pretty much every aspect of our lives.

The consequences can be disastrous and will be, because with AI they are creating themselves. It’s not that the worker gets replaced by just a robot or a machine, but to somebody else who knows how to use AI.

While we can interrogate our own decisions, those made by machines have become increasingly enigmatic.

They can amplify harmful biases that lead to discriminatory decisions or unfair outcomes that reinforce inequalities. They can be used to mislead consumers and distort competition. Further, the opaque and complex nature by which they collect and process large volumes of personal data can put people’s privacy rights in jeopardy.

Currently there are little or no rules/Laws for how companies can or can’t use algorithms in general, or those that harness AI in particular.

Adaptive algorithms have been linked to terrorist attacks and beneficial social movements.

So it’s not to far fetched to say:  That personalised AI is driving people toward self-reinforcing echo chambers of extremism, or to advocate that it is possible that someone could ask AI to create a virus, or an alternative to money.

Where is this all going to end up?

A conscious robot faking emotions – like Sorrow – Joy – Sadness – Pain- and the rest, that wants to bond with you.

———————————

It all depends on what you think consciousness is.

Yes a robot could be a thousand time more intelligent than a human, with the question becoming in essence, does any kind of subjective experiences become a consciousness experience. If so the subjective feeling of consciousness is an illusion created by brain processes, that a machine replicates and such a process would be conscious in the way that we are.

At the moment machines with minds are mainstays of science fiction.

Indeed, the concept of a machine with a subjective experience of the world and a first-person view of itself goes against the grain of mainstream AI research. It collides with questions about the nature of consciousness and self—things we still don’t entirely understand.

Even imagining such a machine’s existence raises serious ethical questions that we may never be able to answer. What rights would such a being have, and how might we safeguard them?

It is a machine that thinks and believes it has consciousness how we would know if one were conscious.

Perhaps you can understand, in principle, how the machine is processing information and there are who  are confirmable with that. However an important feature of a learning machine is that its teacher will often be very largely ignorant of quite what is going on inside and has no way of knowing if conscious exists.

And yet, while conscious machines may still be mythical, their very possibility shapes how we think about the machines we are building today.

Can machines think?

——————-

They’re used for everything from recognizing your voice face listening to your heart, arranging your life.

All kinds of things can be algorithms, and they’re not confined to computers with the impact of potential new legislation to limit the influence of algorithms on our lives remaining unclear.

There’s often little more than a basic explanation from tech companies on how their algorithmic systems work and what they’re used for. Take Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has come under scrutiny for tweaking its algorithms in a way that helped incentivize more negative content on the world’s largest social network.

Laws for algorithmic transparency are necessary before specific usages and applications of AI can be regulated.  When it comes to addressing these risks, regulators have a variety of options available, such as producing instructive guidance, undertaking enforcement activity and, where necessary, issuing financial penalties for unlawful conduct and mandating new practices.

We need to force large Internet companies such as Google, Meta, TikTok and others to “give users the option to engage with a platform without being manipulated by algorithms driven by user-specific data in order to shape and manipulate users’ experiences — and give consumers the choice to flip it on or off.

It will inevitably affect others such as Spotify and Netflix that depend deeply on algorithmically-driven curation.

We live in an unfair world, so any model you make is going to be unfair in one way or another.

For example, there have been concerns about whether the data going into facial-recognition technology can make the algorithm racist, not to mention what makes military drones to kill.

—————

Going forward there are a number of potential areas we could focus on, and, of these, transparency and fairness have been shown to be particularly significant.

Artificial Intelligence as a Driving Force for the Economy and Society and Wars.

In some cases this lack of transparency may make it more difficult for people to exercise their rights – including those under the GDPR. It may also mean algorithmic systems face insufficient scrutiny in some areas (for example from the public, the media and researchers). The 10 Most Important AI Trends For 2024 Everyone Must Be Ready For Now

While legislators scratch their heads over-regulating it,the speed at which artificial intelligence (AI) evolves and integrates into our lives is only going to increase in 2024. Legislators have never been great at keeping pace with technology, but the obviously game-changing nature of AI is starting to make them sit up and take note.

The next generation of generative AI tools will go far beyond the chatbots and image generators becoming more powerful.  We will start to see them embedded into creative platforms and productivity tools, such as generative design tools and voice synthesizers.

Being able to tell the difference between the real and the computer-generated will become an increasingly valuable tool in the critical skills toolbox!

AI ethicists will be increasingly in demand as businesses seem to demonstrate that they are adhering to ethical standards and deploying appropriate safeguards.

95 percent of customer service leaders expect their customers will be served by AI bots at some point in the next three years. Doctors will use it to assist them in writing up patient notes or medical images. Coders will use it to speed up writing software and to test and debug their output.

40% of employment globally is exposed to AI, which rises to 60% in advanced economies.

An example is Adobe’s integration of generative AI into its Firefly design tools, trained entirely on proprietary data, to alleviate fears that copyright and ownership could be a problem in the future.

Quantum computing – capable of massively speeding up certain calculation-heavy compute workloads – is increasingly being found to have applications in AI.

AI can solve really hard, aspirational problems, that people maybe are not capable of solving” such as health, agriculture and climate change,

We need to bridge the gap between AI’s potential and its practical application and whether technology would affect what it means to be human.

They are already creating a two tier world, of the have and have not, driving inequality to a deep human value of authenticity and presence.

Will new technologies lead us, or are they already leading us and our children to confuse virtual communities and human connection for the real thing?

Generative AI presents a future where creativity and technology are more closely linked than ever before. If they do, then we may lose something precious about what it means to be human.

How can we ensure equal access to the technology?

If we look to A.I. as a happiness provider, we will only create a greater imbalance than we already have.

If AI Algorithms run the world there will be no time off.

Humans are now hackable animals, so AI might save us from ourselves.

AI will become the only thing that understands these embedded systems is scary.

General AI may completely up-end even the contemplation of reason. Not only will “resistance be futile”, it could become inconceivable for a dumbfounded majority.

One thing is certain, in about a hundred years we will have an idea of what makes us different and more intelligent than computers, but dont worry, AI has the potential to change education and the way we learn.

( Fifteen minute read)

The last post this year, have a peaceful Christmas.

This post is a follow up to the post, ( What is life, What does it mean to be alive). It is also an attempt to argue for as many preposterous positions as possible in the shortest space of time possible.

That there are no options other than accepting that life is objectively meaningful or not meaningful at all.

Science requires proof, religious belief requires faith.

So let’s get God and Gods out of the way.

.Could quantum physics help explain a God that could be in two places at once? (Credit: Nasa)

If you believe in God, then the idea of God being bound by the laws of physics is nonsense, because God can do everything, even travel faster than light. If you don’t believe in God, then the question is equally nonsensical, because there isn’t a God and nothing can travel faster than light.

Perhaps the question is really one for agnostics, who don’t know whether there is a God.

The idea that God might be “bound” by the laws of physics – which also govern chemistry and biology might not be so far stretched that the James Webb telescope might discover him or her. Whether it does or does not, if it did discovered life on another planet and the human race realizes that its long loneliness in time and space may be over — the possibility we’re no longer alone in the universe is where scientific empiricism and religious faith intersect, with NO true answer?.

Could any answer help us prove whether or not God exists, not on your nanny.

If God wasn’t able to break the laws of physics, she or he arguably wouldn’t be as powerful as you’d expect a supreme being to be. But if he or she could, why haven’t we seen any evidence of the laws of physics ever being broken in the Universe?

If there is a God who created the entire universe and ALL of its laws of physics, does God follow God’s own laws? Or can God supersede his own laws, such as travelling faster than the speed of light and thus being able to be in two different places at the same time?

Let’s consider whether God can be in more than one place at the same time.

(According to quantum mechanics, particles are by definition in a mix of different states until you actually measure them.)

There is something faster than the speed of light after all: Quantum information.

This doesn’t prove or disprove God, but it can help us think of God in physical terms – maybe as a shower of entangled particles, transferring quantum information back and forth, and so occupying many places at the same time? Even many universes at the same time?

But is it true?

A few years ago, a group of physicists posited that particles called tachyons travelled above light speed. Fortunately, their existence as real particles is deemed highly unlikely. If they did exist, they would have an imaginary mass and the fabric of space and time would become distorted – leading to violations of causality (and possibly a headache for God).

(This in itself does not say anything at all about God. It merely reinforces the knowledge that light travels very fast indeed.)

We can calculate that light has travelled roughly 1.3 x 10 x 23 (1.3 times 10 to the power 23) km in the 13.8 billion years of the Universe’s existence. Or rather, the observable Universe’s existence.

The Universe is expanding at a rate of approximately 70km/s per Mpc (1 Mpc = 1 Megaparsec or roughly 30 billion billion kilometres), so current estimates suggest that the distance to the edge of the universe is 46 billion light years. As time goes on, the volume of space increases, and light has to travel for longer to reach us.

We cannot observe or see across the entirety of the Universe that has grown since the Big Bang because insufficient time has passed for light from the first fractions of a second to reach us. Some argue that we therefore cannot be sure whether the laws of physics could be broken in other cosmic regions – perhaps they are just local, accidental laws. And that leads us on to something even bigger than the Universe.

But if inflation could happen once, why not many times?

We know from experiments that quantum fluctuations can give rise to pairs of particles suddenly coming into existence, only to disappear moments later. And if such fluctuations can produce particles, why not entire atoms or universes? It’s been suggested that, during the period of chaotic inflation, not everything was happening at the same rate – quantum fluctuations in the expansion could have produced bubbles that blew up to become universes in their own right.

How come all the physical laws and parameters in the universe happen to have the values that allowed stars, planets and ultimately life to develop?

We shouldn’t be surprised to see biofriendly physical laws – they after all produced us, so what else would we see? Some theists, however, argue it points to the existence of a God creating favourable conditions.

But God isn’t a valid scientific explanation.

We can’t disprove the idea that a God may have created the multiverse.

No matter what is believable or not, things can appear from nowhere and disappear to nowhere.

If you find this hard to swallow, what follows will make you choke.

First there is panpsychism, the idea that “consciousness pervades the universe and is a fundamental feature of it.

Even particles are never compelled to do anything, but are rather disposed, from their own nature, to respond rationally to their experience. That the universe is conscious and is acting towards a purpose of realising the full potential of its consciousness.

The radicalism of this “teleological cosmopsychism” is made clear by its implication that “during the first split second of time, the universe fine-tuned itself in order to allow for the emergence of life billions of years in the future”. To do this, “the universe must in some sense have been aware of this future possibility”.

That the universe itself has a built-in purpose, the disappointingly vague goal of which is “rational matter achieving a higher realisation of its nature.

The laws of physics are just right for conscious life to evolve that it can’t have been an accident.

It is hard to see why the universe’s purpose should give our lives one. Indeed, to believe one plays an infinitesimally small part in the unfolding of a cosmic master plan makes each human life look insignificant.

The basic question about our place in the Universe is one that may be answered by scientific investigations.

What are the next steps to finding life elsewhere?

Today’s telescopes can look at many stars and tell if they have one or more orbiting planets. Even more, they can determine if the planets are the right distance away from the star to have liquid water, the key ingredient to life as we know it.

NEXT:How to Choose Which Social Media Platforms to Use

We live in a time of political fury and hardening cultural divides. But if there is one thing on which virtually everyone is agreed, it is that the news and information we receive is biased. Much of the outrage that floods social media, occasionally leaking into opinion columns and broadcast interviews, is not simply a reaction to events themselves, but to the way in which they are reported and framed that are the problem.

This mentality now with the help of technological advances in communication spans the entire political spectrum and pervades societies around the world twisting our basic understanding of reality to our own ends.

This is not as simple as distrust.

The appearance of digital platforms, smartphones and the ubiquitous surveillance have enable to usher in a new public mood that is instinctively suspicious of anyone claiming to describe reality in a fair and objective fashion. Which will end in a Trumpian refusal to accept any mainstream or official account of the world with people become increasingly dependent on their own experiences and their own beliefs about how the world really works.

The crisis of democracy and of truth are one and the same:

Individuals are increasingly suspicious of the “official” stories they are being told, and expect to witness things for themselves.

How exactly do we distinguish this critical mentality from that of the conspiracy theorist, who is convinced that they alone have seen through the official version of events? Or to turn the question around, how might it be possible to recognise the most flagrant cases of bias in the behaviour of reporters and experts, but nevertheless to accept that what they say is often a reasonable depiction of the world?

It is tempting to blame the internet, populists or foreign trolls for flooding our otherwise rational society with lies.

But this underestimates the scale of the technological and philosophical transformations that are under way. The single biggest change in our public sphere is that we now have an unimaginable excess of news and content, where once we had scarcity. The explosion of information available to us is making it harder, not easier, to achieve consensus on truth.

As the quantity of information increases, the need to pick out bite-size pieces of content rises accordingly.

In this radically sceptical age, questions of where to look, what to focus on and who to trust are ones that we increasingly seek to answer for ourselves, without the help of intermediaries. This is a liberation of sorts, but it is also at the heart of our deteriorating confidence in public institutions.

There is now a self-sustaining information ecosystem becoming a serious public health problem across the world, aided by the online circulation of conspiracy theories and pseudo-science. However the panic surrounding echo chambers and so-called filter bubbles is largely groundless.

What, then, has to changed?

The key thing is that the elites of government and the media have lost their monopoly over the provision of information, but retain their prominence in the public eye.

And digital platforms now provide a public space to identify and rake over the flaws, biases and falsehoods of mainstream institutions.

The result is an increasingly sceptical citizenry, each seeking to manage their media diet, checking up on individual journalists in order to resist the pernicious influence of the establishment.

The problem we face is not, then, that certain people are oblivious to the “mainstream media”, or are victims of fake news, but that we are all seeking to see through the veneer of facts and information provided to us by public institutions.

Facts and official reports are no longer the end of the story.

The truth is now threatened by a radically different system, which is transforming the nature of empirical evidence and memory. One term for this is “big data”, which highlights the exponential growth in the quantity of data that societies create, thanks to digital technologies.

The reason there is so much data today is that more and more of our social lives are mediated digitally. Internet browsers, smartphones, social media platforms, smart cards and every other smart interface record every move we make. Whether or not we are conscious of it, we are constantly leaving traces of our activities, no matter how trivial.

But it is not the escalating quantity of data that constitutes the radical change.

Something altogether new has occurred that distinguishes today’s society from previous epochs.

In the past, recording devices were principally trained upon events that were already acknowledged as important.

Things no longer need to be judged “important” to be captured.

Consciously, we photograph events and record experiences regardless of their importance. Unconsciously, we leave a trace of our behaviour every time we swipe a smart card, address Amazon’s Alexa or touch our phone.

For the first time in human history, recording now happens by default, and the question of significance is addressed separately.

This shift has prompted an unrealistic set of expectations regarding possibilities for human knowledge.

When everything is being recorded, our knowledge of the world no longer needs to be mediated by professionals, experts, institutions and theories. Data can simply “speak for itself”. This is a fantasy of a truth unpolluted by any deliberate human intervention – the ultimate in scientific objectivity.

From this perspective, every controversy can in principle be settled thanks to the vast trove of data – CCTV, records of digital activity and so on – now available to us. Reality in its totality is being recorded, and reporters and officials look dismally compromised by comparison.

It is often a single image that seems to capture the truth of an event, only now there are cameras everywhere.

No matter how many times it is disproven, the notion that “the camera doesn’t lie” has a peculiar hold over our imaginations. In a society of blanket CCTV and smartphones, there are more cameras than people, and the torrent of data adds to the sense that the truth is somewhere amid the deluge, ignored by mainstream accounts.

The central demand of this newly sceptical public is “so show me”.

The rise of blanket surveillance technologies has paradoxical effects, raising expectations for objective knowledge to unrealistic levels, and then provoking fury when those in the public eye do not meet them.

Surely, in this age of mass data capture, the truth will become undeniable.

On the other hand, as the quantity of data becomes overwhelming – greater than human intelligence can comprehend – our ability to agree on the nature of reality seems to be declining. Once everything is, in principle, recordable, disputes heat up regarding what counts as significant in the first place.

What we are discovering is that, once the limitations on data capture are removed, there are escalating opportunities for conflict over the nature of reality.

Remember AI does not exist in a vacuum, its employment can and is discriminating against communities, powered by vast amounts of energy,  producing CO2 emissions.

Lastly the Advertising Industry. The impact of COVID-19 on the advertising industry - Passionate In ...

These day it seems that it has free rain to claim anything.

Like them or loathe them, advertisements are everywhere and they’re worsening not just the climate crisis, and ecological damage by promoting sustainability in consumption and inequality. Presenting a fake, idealised world that papers over an often brutal reality.

But advertising in one sense is even more dangerous, because it is so pervasive, sophisticated in its techniques and harder to see through. When hundreds of millions of people have desires for more and more stuff and for more and more services and experiences, that really adds up and puts a strain on the Earth.

The toll of disasters propelled by climate change in 2023 can be tallied with numbers — thousands of people dead, millions of others who lost jobs, homes and hope, and tens of billions of dollars sheared off economies. But numbers can’t reflect the way climate change is experienced — the intensity, the insecurity and the inequality that people on Earth are now living.

In every place that climate change makes its mark, inequality is made worse.

How are we going to protect the truth:

It goes without saying that spiritual beliefs will protect themselves. Lies, propaganda and fake news however is the challenge for our age.

Working out who to trust and who not to believe has been a facet of human life since our ancestors began living in complex societies. Politics has always bred those who will mislead to get ahead.

With news sources splintering and falsehoods spreading widely online, can anything be done?

Check Google.

Welcome to the world of “alternative facts”. It is a bewildering maze of claim and counterclaim, where hoaxes spread with frightening speed on social media and spark angry backlashes from people who take what they read at face value.

It is an environment where the mainstream media is accused of peddling “fake news” by the most powerful man in the world.

Voters are seemingly misled by the very politicians they elected and even scientific research – long considered a reliable basis for decisions – is dismissed as having little value.

Without a common starting point – a set of facts that people with otherwise different viewpoints can agree on – it will be hard to address any of the problems that the world now faces. The threat posed by the spread of misinformation should not be underestimated.

Some warn that “fake news” threatens the democratic process itself.

A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center towards the end of last year found that 64% of American adults said made-up news stories were causing confusion about the basic facts of current issues and events.

How we control the dissemination of things that seem to be untrue. We need a new way to decide what is trustworthy.

Take Wikipedia itself – which can be edited by anyone but uses teams of volunteer editors to weed out inaccuracies – is far from perfect.

These platforms and their like are simply in it for the money.

Last year, links to websites masquerading as reputable sources started appearing on social media sites like Facebook.

Stories about the Pope endorsing Donald Trump’s candidacy and Hillary Clinton being indicted for crimes related to her email scandal were shared widely despite being completely made up. The ability to share them widely on social media means a slice of the advertising revenue that comes from clicks.

Truth is no longer dictated by authorities, but is networked by peers. For every fact there is a counterfact. All those counterfacts and facts look identical online, which is confusing to most people.

Information spreads around the world in seconds, with the potential to reach billions of people. But it can also be dismissed with a flick of the finger. What we choose to engage with is self-reinforcing and we get shown more of the same. It results in an exaggerated “echo chamber” effect.

The challenge here is how to burst these bubbles.

One approach that has been tried is to challenge facts and claims when they appear on social media. Organisations like Full Fact, for example, look at persistent claims made by politicians or in the media, and try to correct them. (The BBC also has its own fact-checking unit, called Reality Check.)

This approach doesn’t work on social media because the audiences were largely disjointed.

Even when a correction reached a lot of people and a rumour reached a lot of people, they were usually not the same people. The problem is, corrections do not spread very well. This lack of overlap is a specific challenge when it comes to political issues.

On Facebook political bodies can put something out, pay for advertising, put it in front of millions of people, yet it is hard for those not being targeted to know they have done that. They can target people based on how old they are, where they live, what skin colour they have, what gender they are.

We shouldn’t think of social media as just peer-to-peer communication – it is also the most powerful advertising platform there has ever been. We have never had a time when it has been so easy to advertise to millions of people and not have the other millions of us notice.

Twitter and Facebook both insist they have strict rules on what can be advertised and particularly on political advertising. Regardless, the use of social media adverts in politics can have a major impact.

We need some transparency about who is using social media advertising when they are in election campaigns and referendum campaigns. We need watchdogs that will go around and say, ‘Hang on, this doesn’t stack up’ and ask for the record to be corrected.

We need Platforms to ensure that people have read content before sharing it to develop standards.

Google says it is working on ways to improve its algorithms so they take accuracy into account when displaying search results. “Judging which pages on the web best answer a query is a challenging problem and we don’t always get it right,”

The challenge is going to be writing tools that can check specific types of claims.

Built a fact-checker app that could sit in a browser and use Watson’s language skills to scan the page and give a percentage likelihood of whether it was true.

This idea of helping break through the isolated information bubbles that many of us now live in, comes up again and again.

By presenting people with accurate facts it should be possible to at least get a debate going.

There is a large proportion of the population living in what we would regard as an alternative reality.  By suggesting things to people that are outside their comfort zone but not so far outside they would never look at it you can keep people from self-radicalising in these bubbles.

There are understandable fears about powerful internet companies filtering what people see.

We should think about adding layers of credibility to sources. We need to tag and structure quality content in effective ways.

But what if people don’t agree with official sources of information at all?

This is a problem that governments around the world are facing as the public views what they tell them with increasing scepticism. There is an unwillingness to bend one’s mind around facts that don’t agree with one’s own viewpoint.

The first stage in that is crowdsourcing facts.  So before you have a debate, you come up with the commonly accepted facts that people can debate from.

Technology may help to solve this grand challenge of our age, but it is time for a little more self-awareness too.

In the end the world needs a new Independent Organisation to examine all technology against human values. Future war will be fought on Face recognition.

To certify and hold the original programs of all technology.

Have I been trained by robbery its manter when it comes to algorithms.

The whole goal of the transition is not to allow a handful of Westerners to peacefully go through life in a Tesla, a world in flames; it is to allow humanity – and the rest of biodiversity – to live decently.

( Five minute read)

We have very limited ability at this stage to imagine the applications of quantum computing, but down the road in the near term they could solve countless problems – and create a lot of new ones.

In order to prepare for what is coming.

Educate ourselves on the reality of Quantum Computers, and the impacts they could have around the world is now paramount if we wish to keep the values we place on life.

Soon will come a time when trusting a quantum computer will require a leap of faith.

Every year, new computers are being developed that are faster and smarter than ever before. But if you really want to take things to the next level, you’ve got to go quantum.

This new frontier of humanity could open hitherto unfathomable frontiers in mathematics and science.

Quantum’s industrial uses are boundless.

In the future, we will rely on everywhere in the world having access to quantum technology, but with risks, to national-security migraine. Its problem-solving capacity will soon render all existing cryptography obsolete, jeopardizing communications, financial transactions, and even military defences.

Modern warfare and national–security mechanisms are grounded in the speed and precision of decision making. If your computer is faster than theirs, you win.

The digital devices in our everyday lives – from laptop computers to smartphones – are all based on 0s and 1s: so-called ‘bits’. But quantum computers are based on ‘qubits’ – the quantum 0s and 1s that are altogether stranger, but also more powerful. (So-called quantum particles can be in two places at the same time and also strangely connected even though they are millions of miles apart.)

They will pave the way for systems that can solve complex real world problems that the best computers we have today are incapable of.Entanglement

Currently, computers solve problems in a simple linear way, one calculation at a time.

A quantum computers could do multiple calculations all at the same time, millions of miles apart, mirroring each other’s actions instantaneously, transporting information from one chip to another with a reliability of 99.999993% at record speeds.

Now that we understand what AI is capable of we also need to know its limits.

Before long, much of the material on the internet will have been written, or at least co-written, by AIs.

What will happen when AIs are being trained on texts they have written themselves?

The amount of data consumed in this way keeps going up and up.

What happens when data runs out?

——-

Generative AI is in a Cambrian explosion of capability.

Generative Ai, is now creating art, make music, generate synthetic humans, birth artificial influencers and celebrities, literally generate video from text, and threaten to upend our notions of creativity, art, public domain, copyright, and the nature of reality itself.

This is just the beginning, the ultimate thing for AI to create is more of itself.

When maybe AI is also at the point where it can start writing the code that will make its own AI even better.  And that’s like where the true singularity is … when it can kind of set itself to improve itself, when it can start to improve itself better than what a human can.

It’s impossible to speculate what society could truly look like in such a situation.

But I think in most of our lifetimes we’re going to experience that. Exciting is one word for that.

Another is terrifying.  Machines that can outthink humans. Your brain is the most intelligent learning algorithm in the universe that we know so far. The truth is that for now, AGI remains a fantasy.

Even if AGI is never achieved, the self-teaching approach may still change what sorts of AI are created.

The rapid development of AI that can train itself also raises questions about how well we can control its growth. If AI starts to generate intelligence by itself, there’s no guarantee that it will be human-like.

Whether this will happen, and how it will progress if it does is impossible to know, but there’s no guarantee that humanity as we know it would survive such a time, or that the vast AI entities potentially created by such an explosion would be benevolent to life as we know it.

I think that really where AI can be empowering is in that long tail when there’s like non-consumption with the alternative, where you could not afford to create that content in the first place.

And you can imagine that with like these very obscure topics.

You could even imagine that for news where maybe there’s something that happened in your local neighbourhood where only 20 people want to read that article and then it doesn’t make sense for a human to write it.

Generating artificial intelligence is all ready producing images like a photographer, creating music like an artist, selling like a sales rep, diagnosing disease like a doctor, and (gulp!) writing text like a human.

The technology could potentially also be used to design drugs more quickly by accurately simulating their chemical reactions, a calculation too difficult for current supercomputers. They could also provide even more accurate systems to forecast weather and project the impact of climate change.

Rather than humans teaching machines to think like humans, machines might teach humans new ways of thinking.

All human comments appreciated. All like clicks and abuse chucked in the bin.
