(Twenty-minute read)

NOT BY A LONG SHOT.

When you hear the word slavery, it conjures images of shackles, mistreated people of color, forced to work.

This image was once a true, vivid picture;

However, the term slavery has broadened, and now slavery comes with many more definitions creating a new image for the vile term slavery.

THERE IS A NEW, MODERN, INVISIBLE SLAVERY THAT ENSLAVES PEOPLE AND THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW IT ! !! AND MOST OF US CHOSE THIS FORM OF SLAVERY.

This new strain is much more virulent and deadly adding hundreds of thousands of new slaves to the mix every minute of the day  – Algorithms Slavery. A hidden world programming its self.

Slaves are cheap these days.

There are an estimated as high as 45.8 million people in modern slavery around the world. More than in the 18th century at the height of the transatlantic slave trade.

Simply knowing the statistic that 45.8 million individuals are enslaved in our world is not enough to put an end to the malpractice of modern-day slavery.

We all can and should play a part in the international advocacy for the freedom and rights of all, not only as fellow human beings but also as concerned community leaders and consumers in the global economy.

They’re the step-by-step instructions working quietly behind the scenes of everyday life; in internet search engines, satnavs, air traffic control, and food delivery services.

Companies and governments increasingly rely upon algorithms to make decisions that affect people’s lives and livelihoods – from loan approvals to recruiting, legal sentencing, and college admissions – from internet search results to product recommendations, dating matches, and what content goes up on our social media feeds.

Slavery today includes:

10 million children.

24.9 million people in forced labor.

15.4 million people in forced marriage.

4.8 million people in forced sexual exploitation.

Human trafficking and slavery are the fastest-growing illegal activities in the world today.

Keep the National Human Trafficking Resource Center’s 24/7 confidential hotline handy.

Saving this number in your contacts and using it whenever suspicious of having seen a victim of human trafficking is one of the easiest and most effective ways to aid law enforcement officials in uncovering exploitation, bringing traffickers to justice, and victims to freedom and restoration.

                                                ——————

Algorithms have been rising fast and saturating our modern world.

We should not take the path of least resistance by sitting in judgment on the past while ignoring the injustices of our day.

Most algorithms in the world today are created and managed by for-profit companies, and many businesses regard their algorithms as highly valuable forms of intellectual property that must remain in a “black box.”

Every time a site is opened we are confronted with an Agreement Templates a choice to Agree or not.  Many websites prompt you to agree to their terms of use before you can register on the website or even use it.

There are two different types of website agreements: browsewrap and clickwrap.

A browsewrap agreement is connected to the main page of the product by a hyperlink. The hyperlink leads to another webpage that will have the terms and conditions of the agreement detailed.

A clickwrap agreement is designed to ensure that the user has a chance to see the terms of use and they must also actively agree to the terms in order to agree. (This one is more legally binding.)

But are not transparent as they do not reveal the source code, inputs, and outputs of the algorithm that is running the site.

Without this transparency, the question is how can they be legally binding.

Specifically, machine learning algorithms – and deep learning algorithms in particular – are usually built on just a few hundred lines of code. The algorithm’s logic is mostly learned from training data and is rarely reflected in its source code. Which is to say, some of today’s best-performing algorithms are often the most opaque.

This is the new form of slavery.  Now being promoted by track and trace, with the current Coivid pandemic digital certifications that no one knows how or who will control, the data that they are now producing and in the future.

It suggests that technical transparency – must become law.

Essentially such laws would mandate that users be able to demand the data behind the algorithmic decisions made for them, including in recommendation systems, credit, and insurance risk systems, advertising programs, and social networks.

In doing so, it tackles “intentional concealment” by corporations.

But it doesn’t address the technical challenges associated with transparency in modern algorithms. Here, a movement called explainable AI (xAI) might be helpful.

However, this approach merely shifts the burden of belief from the algorithm itself to the regulators.

In the world of data analytics, it’s frequently assumed that more data is better.

But I firmly believe that the resistance to getting vaccinated is founded on this dilemma of trust.

Risk management, data itself is often a source of liability. That’s beginning to hold true for artificial intelligence as well.

All human comments are appreciated. All like clicks and abuse chucked in the bin.

THE BEADY EYE ASKS: WHAT IS SLAVERY NOW? IT’S NOT LOCKDOWN DUE TO A PANDEMIC. IT’S NOT ISOLATION. IT IS STILL AN EUPHEMISMS FOR FORCED BONDAGE.

Modern day Slavery

( FIVE MINUTE READ)

Every 30 seconds, someone is abducted into slavery. That means, by the time you are done reading this blog article, there will be 4-5 more slaves in the world. This equates to 5.4 victims of modern slavery for every 1,000 people in the world.

It exists today in over 130 countries with billions in profits linked to forced labor. Modern slavery is very cheap. The average cost of a slave today is $90. Compare that to 1809 when average the price was $40,000

So what’s the connection to you?

At the moment you hear the world will never be the same due to COVID-19.

I am sure the same was said after world war one, world war two, and all previous pandemics.

Slavery is not simply a thing of the past.

As you read this post, you are probably using a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Each device requires minerals – including gold. Perhaps the gold in your electronic device was mined by slaves.

Slave-owners often use euphemisms instead of the term “slavery” to avoid getting caught. Such euphemisms include domestic servitude, debt bondage, bonded labor, attached labor, restavec (a French word that means “one who stays with”), forced labor and indentured servitude.

The other forms of forced labor and servitude in the world today may share some slave‐like properties, and are no doubt as pernicious in their victimization and exploitation, indeed may in some cases be even more brutal than some high-end forms of sexual slavery, but they are not slavery, which is quite distinctive in its perfidy and its social, economic, cultural and psychological attributes and consequences.

Inflating these already horrendously high figures by conflating slavery with all forms of human domination and forced labor, however well-meaning, and whatever the rhetorical payoffs, simply invite skepticism and the charge of waging moral crusades undermining the desperately needed effort to abolish, once and for all, these evils from the world.

Although slavery is illegal in every country in the modern world there are at any given time, an estimated 40.3 million people worldwide are in modern slavery. And it is still as brutal and inhuman today as it was in history.

Human Trafficking is ranked as the 3rd largest international crime industry – just behind Drugs and Arms Trafficking.

The complexity of the crimes makes it very difficult to quantify the scale of those living in modern-day slavery but it is estimated that 800,000 people are illegally trafficked across international borders every year.

Nowadays slavery doesn’t only come in the obvious form in which one person owns another person (which is traditionally called ‘chattel slavery’).

Migrant workers often become bonded labor to pay off those who smuggled them to the new country – they dare not break free for fear of being deported. Passports are confiscated from migrant workers to keep them in bondage.

In fact, 65% of the world’s slaves are in a forced labor situation.

I’m not sure what the average price of a slave is today, but it can’t be more than fifty or sixty dollars.

Almost half of the world’s slaves are found in India.

Every item we buy has a back story some good some bad.

Just think when we come out of this current Pandemic with a world economically on its knees what it is going to mean for those who have to earn a living to stay alive.

We might not be transporting slaves but if we don’t question where and who or what produced it, we will be contributing not to a global recovery but too enhanced slavery.

All human comments appreciated. All like clicks and abuse chucked in the bin.

Human trafficking, Modern day Slavery

I start this post with the below link which I must warn you has horrific footage of the sickening reality of human trafficking.

I also urge you if you are not willing to live in a world where every year, millions of people are trafficked into the modern-day equivalent of slavery to download THE FREEDOM APP.

It is a problem in virtually every region of the globe and will probably always be a problem in our world consumer Societies.

There is no need for me to point out that the Planet has plenty of problems but this is a human crime so monstrous we can no longer say we had no idea that millions of already desperately poor men, women, and children are being subjected to the further indignity of being sold against their will for labor and sex.

Ask yourself what good is all our technology our intellectual power or political power, our Criminal Justice Systems when they are only two countries where there is no Slavery, Greenland and Iceland.

There are now double the amount of slaves that came out of Africa -27 million. 22% are in forced Prostitution, 10% in imposed state labor, 68% in forces exploitation creating the goods and delivering the services we all rely on every day.

At this moment, men, women and children are being trafficked and exploited all over the world.

Human trafficking is the third most profitable crime, after drug and arms dealing. Due to the nature of the industry, it makes it impossible to know the exact value generated, but estimates of worldwide forced labor and sex trafficking profits are as high as $200 billion annually.

It is an Industry that is engaging in behavior that goes against our morals, values, or fundamental beliefs about what is right and wrong, and what is a sin or a necessary evil.

It is an Industry that created the wealth behind a many a family fortune during 1865 and there after by abolishment compensation payments. For example Gladstone the Prime Minister of England.

In the United States is has been 148 years (and 43 days) since former President Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation, about 145 since Congress made it official with the 13th amendment, and we still have slavery rampant throughout its dream of Freedom.

Exploitation can take many forms including sex trafficking, forced labor, domestic servitude, and trafficking of children pornography and commercial sex.

It has moved online and towards the safety of fake names and accounts and rerouted IP addresses. Online prostitution is ruining lives.

Human trafficking is a harsh reality for millions of women, men, and children throughout the world every year. It oppresses and exploits without mercy, often using violence and power to exert dominance and demand submission of the victims.

The precise number of people being trafficked is difficult to estimate, but the Global Slavery Index (GSI) suggests 36 million victims worldwide are involved in forced labor and sexual exploitation.

This is particularly relevant to any and all conversations that take place concerning future relations between the United States and Asia, especially as it relates to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), because, according to the GSI, of those 36 million trafficking victims, nearly two-thirds are from Asian countries.

Humanitarian photographer Lisa Kristine emerges from an illegal gold mine in Ghana after photographing the enslaved miners who work inside. Photo: Lisa Kristine, Lisa Kristine Photography

Human exploitation in Asia is one of the most severe human rights problems of our time.  The GSI places India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Thailand in the top 10 countries with the highest number of trafficking victims in the world. The most egregious countries are India, which tops the list with 14 million victims of trafficking, followed by China at 3.2 million, and Pakistan with 2.1 million trafficking victims.

Trafficking, however, is not something that we can consider an isolated or restricted crime. Everyone must address human exploitation because trafficked individuals travel from 127 countries and are exploited in 137 countries, on every continent and in every type of economy.

So the next time you go shopping think about where and what cost before you putting it in your shopping basket.

Perhaps the system of Capitalism we see that privatizes profits and nationalizes losses is impossible to justify, but the selling of humans for free labor is beyond the pale.  Some how Capitalism for the want of a better word, must be rescued from the Bankers.

If any one reading this post recognizes the bastards in the above U Tube video you know what to do.

The exploitation of human beings for profit is everyone’s business.

Exploitation, Human trafficking, Modern day Slavery, Sex trafficking, Slavery footprint

This is one of the many problems in the world that we as humans should be ashamed of.  We turn a blind eye to it because it reminds us what kind of inhumane treatment we are capable of as human beings.

The 6th Dec this year marked the 150 years since the ratification of the 13th Amendment formally abolishing slavery in the US.

But almost 150 years after the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery and involuntary servitude, there are still men, women and children enslaved into labor and commercial sexual exploitation in the U.S.

There are more people in slavery today than at any time in history.

It is now the third – largest and fastest – growing crime worldwide. The average cost of a modern-day slave is a mere $90. This is a fraction of the average cost of a slave in 1850, which was $40,000( in current dollar value)

person behind bars

Each and every one are a living, breathing reminders that the war against slavery remains unfinished.

Unfortunately, for many of the world’s workers, exploitation is a reality that must be factored into the path towards a better life.

Its roots are in the three greatest problems facing a shared world : Inequality of opportunity, Exploitation for excessive profits, and Sustainability.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates profits (PDF) from this forced labor are $150 billion a year.

The presence of forced labour in the supply chains of major manufacturers has been repeatedly documented. Human exploitation has built our world and continues to drive global economic growth.

Cheap labour, cheap sex and cheap goods are woven into the fabric of our individual lives.

It is easy to be horrified about slavery while absolving ourselves of direct responsibility.

“[Human trafficking] ought to concern every person because it is a debasement of our common humanity. It ought to concern every community because it tears at our social fabric. It ought to concern every business because it distorts markets. It ought to concern every nation because it endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime.” —President Barack Obama.

Here are some hard facts:

Hopefully they might make you think twice.

Some 35.8 million people are currently trapped in modern-day slavery, forced to pick cotton, grow cannabis and prostitute themselves among other things. 167 countries, said modern slavery contributed to the production of at least 122 goods from 58 countries.

India comes top, with more than 14.29 m people reckoned to be equivalent to slaves, followed by China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Russia.

Uzbekistan is the second offender on the list because every autumn, the government forces over one million people, including children, to harvest cotton.

Mauritania has anti-slavery legislation but it is rarely enforced and a special tribunal set up in March has yet to prosecute any cases. Mauritania abolished slavery in 1981, though without passing legislation to punish slave-owners. To day there are around 150,000 people out of Mauritania’s total population of 3.8m who are still enslaved.

Countries like Qatar in the Middle East were a major destination for men and women from Africa and Asia who are lured with promises of well-paid jobs only to find themselves exploited as domestic workers or in the construction industry.

Africa faces some of the biggest challenges, with armed forces and rebel groups from Somalia to the Central African Republic using child soldiers to mineral-rich Zambia, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo forcing children and adults to “labor in dangerous mines.” Estimated to be one million.

Ivory Coast, 60% of chocolate is produced by an estimated 500,000 child labour.

South Africa, where private hospitals harvest the organs of deceived Brazilians for commercial transplant operations. 70,000 kidneys come annually from the black market.

West Africa the practice of forced servitude called Trokosi.

Australian sex industry.

Afghanistan Young boys sold through a practice call Bacha Bazi.

Senegal. 50,000 homeless children forced to beg.

Brothels of Bali.

Indoor Cannabis Farm in the UK.

Camel Jockeys Persian Gulf.

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, domestic workers in private homes.

Cocoa farms of Ivory Coast, made profitable through the almost-zero cost labour of child workers from Mali.

Fishing boats throughout Asia and the Pacific. Demand for cheap seafood drives modern-day slavery.

Houston is a major labor and sex trafficking hub in the United States.

In the houses and apartments of wealthy Americans, where Guatemalan maids sleep on the floor and are not paid or allowed outside.

Florida is one of the top three states for human trafficking in the U.S.

It is estimated that there are around 60,000 people in modern-day slavery in the USA

There were at least 5,000 trafficking victims in the UK last year 2014.

Although every government in the world has declared slavery an illegal enterprise, it flourishes. Every year Globally some 60,000 to 80,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year.

The bitter truth is that despite growing awareness of the issue there are still more than 36 million slaves in the world today, trapped in forced labor, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, military service, and child labor.

Trafficking in persons is modern-day slavery and it exists in virtually every country in the world.

Now we all know no matter what we do there will always be people exploited by others.

People are forced into working and poverty at the same time by government legislation, or the lack thereof.

But is it not time to give Immigrants proper legal citizenship’s if earned.

Even if victims identify themselves as such and are aware of their rights, they still might hesitate to report their victimization out of fear of reprisal from the trafficker, lack of trust in law enforcement or fear of deportation.

Is it not time for western rich countries to open proper border crossings for Refugees, and for each to give temporary humanitarian shelter to people fleeing war stricken parts of the world. Let,s say five years temporary residential visa with realistic quotes for each and every country.

Is it not time that we should be abolishing Domestic workers visa.

Is it not time that Slavery and human trafficking should carry a world-wide life sentence for those who are apprehended dealing in human suffering.

(The very nature of human trafficking helps keep modern-day slavery a crime hidden.)

Are governments helping corporations break collective bargaining agreements to lower wages and increase profits?

If the result of working leads to the continued poverty you are trying to get out of, why work at all.

What we see is negative stereotypes about the people commonly found to be victims of human trafficking, especially those involved with prostitution and those with drug addictions.

  • The under reporting of sex trafficking victims who are minors
  • The role that gangs play in sex trafficking
  • Effective counter-trafficking legislation, law enforcement processes and demand-reduction strategies
  • Strategies to stabilize and integrate adult survivors of human trafficking.

Human trafficking is believed to be a growing crime, fueled by low risk and the potential for high monetary gain.

Trade in human misery ... women sit in fishbowl-type rooms, guarded by 'bouncers' in the narrow street known as 'Dolly' in the red-light district of Surabaya, Indonesia.

Today’s slaves are held through debt bondage, indentured servitude or other forms of control. The exploitation of human beings for profit is everyone’s business. We might not be able to end it, but now we know what’s going on, feeling bad is just not good enough.

Technology has changed the way it’s done.

So why not use technology to attack every link in the exploitation network.

Of course there is no realistic solution while we are all slaves of Consumerism. But we do have a weapon to hurt those that use exploitation.  It is in your pocket called spending power.

The world chocolate market is expected to reach $98.3 billion in 2016. A World day of only buying fair trade chocolate would hurt those that use exploited cheap labor.

It is sobering to wonder just how big our individual “slavery footprint” might be.  Also it is both foolish and patronising to treat the people caught up in this trade as naive and helpless victims.

Every 30 seconds, a human being is sold.

Consumerism, Debt Slavery., Modern day Slavery

I run a Magazine Call Silent Witness to Modern day Slavery on Flip board.

I call it Silent Witness because Flipboard does no facilitate comment. In it I post articles and videos from the Internet covering a wide range of Slavery as there is no typical victim of slavery. Modern-day slavery affects men, women and children across the world..

( Have a look. Robert de Mayo Dillon@no1bobdillon.)

It has come to my notice that the biggest source of Slavery get little mention if at all.  Debt Slavery.

In the Oxford Dictionary the term Slave is defined as “a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them” as in the case of the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries where slavery was a legalized institution. These the Dictionary now defines slavery as “a person who works very hard without proper remuneration or appreciation” as in today’s world of a person working for a company or corporation where their efforts are usually under appreciated.  It also describes a slave as “a person who is excessively dependent upon or controlled by something” or “a device, or part of one, directly controlled by another”.  DEBT.

An economy that is consumer based with credit is a disaster in the making because that debt only becomes unmanageable in the long run, especially when the people have no means to repay its debt obligations. Consumerism leads to moral decay with people becoming perpetual servants of mega corporations and international banks.. You saw what happened on Black Friday, it is a reminder of how people react when products they don’t really need are on sale.

Consumers suffer psychological abuse by its creditors.  As long as an individual remains in debt bondage, that person will have to repay that debt until the day that person literally dies in most cases. Imagine how they will react in times of economic despair.

How many people clear their House mortgage in their life time? Interest rates attached to the purchases made is the bond that ties you and the corporate interests or bankers for eternity. It becomes a “control mechanism” as the creditor becomes the “Slave Owner” and the debtor becomes the “Slave”.

When people become ingrained in consumption disregarding the debt they inherit, they become immune to the realities around them.

We are all slave in one way or another and it would be reasonable to say that Debt is a choice which I would agree with. The Interest is not. My bone of contention is that the Interest should stop once the Capital sum is repaid. If your house goes down in value your mortgage and interest payments don’t. Would you not think it reasonable the cost of one a Toll road or Bridge has being repaid it should transfer to public ownership

Anyway Modern day slavery is flourishing with 20.9 million people worldwide victims of forced labor. 4.5 million of these are victims of forced sexual exploitation, while 14.2 million are victims of forced labor exploitation. The remaining 2.2 million are in state-imposed forms of forced labor.

Celebrities’ personal lives still dominate headlines in the main stream media.  The ‘War on Terror’ has taken away civil liberties and the ‘War on Drugs’ has increased the prison population.  High-crime rates in major cities remain problematic. With the rollout of 7000 drones in 2015, endless wars, a looming economic collapse, and endless Pharmaceutical commercials that keep people heavily drugged are serious problems for the world public.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing form of international crime.

Every 30 seconds, a human being is sold for an average price of $90. The profits generated from human trafficking are estimated to be $32 billion every year.

The legal confusion between a job with appalling conditions and criminal exploitation means it can be difficult to identify and prosecute 21st-century slave traders and people traffickers.

In a world driven by profit there is little hope of changing the above till we start using our wallets to force change. One day of boycotting any company that does not pay its employees a living wage would soon make that company sit up and pay attention.

You might think slavery does not touch your life but mark my words Fresh water, Clear Air, and demishing natural resources are being privistised as we speak by Sovereign Wealth Funds, and all knowledge is being stored by Google. Both will ensure Slavery in all its forms.

When the necessities such as food and shelter become scarce the people will begin to panic and lose control over their own lives reality will sink in.

Millions of people are in forced labour around the world.
