Because of its intense history, spiritual weight, and prominent place in global politics, people across the globe view the country through several distinct lenses:
For over 3.5 billion people worldwide—followers of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—Israel is a central spiritual focal point.
Christianity:
It is where Jesus lived, preached, and died, making sites like Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Sea of Galilee essential pilgrimage destinations.
Islam:
Jerusalem (specifically the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound) is the third-holiest city in Islam, associated with the Night Journey of the Prophet Muhammad.
For me:
It represents one of the most fucked countries in the world
A European settler state in the heart of Palestine, ruled by religious zealots, fueled by Western arms.
For the USA:
It’s a key democratic ally in the Middle East, and a necessary safe haven for Jewish people following centuries of persecution and the Holocaust, that very few Americans these days give a fuck about.
To the rest of the world.
It’s a country that through the lens of Palestinian statehood, focusing on military occupations, territorial disputes, and human rights.
To the Muslim world.
Views vary—but the relationship is primarily shaped by three distinct dimensions:
One: The Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem is Islam’s third most sacred location, after Mecca and Medina. Before Muslims face Mecca during prayer, they faced Jerusalem
Two:
Islamic tradition holds that Prophet Muhammad traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem in a single night and ascended to heaven from the spot where the Dome of the Rock stands today.
Three:
The 1948 displacement of over 700,000 Palestinians during Israel’s establishment is viewed across the Muslim world as a historic injustice—a remnant of Western colonialism dividing Arab land.

The concept of the Ummah (the global community of Muslims) fosters strong emotional solidarity with Palestinians living under military occupation in the West Bank or under blockade and conflict in Gaza.
While governments may balance trade and security interests with Israel behind closed doors, to the broader Muslim public, Israel represents both a sacred landscape inextricably tied to their faith and an ongoing symbol of political injustice toward the Palestinian people.
The Israeli.
There is no single “Israeli” view.
Israel is a deeply pluralistic, intense, and often fragmented society.
What the state represents depends heavily on who you ask, their ethnic background, religious beliefs, and daily life experience.
For secular Jews (often concentrated in urban centers like Tel Aviv), Israel is primarily a normal, modern nation-state—a place where Hebrew is the everyday language, weekends run from Friday to Saturday, and Jewish culture is the default atmosphere rather than a minority lifestyle.
It’s a place where Jews control their own destiny rather than relying on the goodwill of host nations.
For traditional (Masorti), National-Religious (Dati Leumi), and Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jews, Israel is much more than just a safe haven—it is a spiritual fulfillment of a 2,000-year-old covenant. The physical manifestation of Jewish history, return, and divine promise. The land itself holds deep religious and ancestral sanctity.
The shift:
Identity surveys show a strong trend of Israelis identifying “Jewish first, Israeli second”, highlighting that for a major portion of the population, the Jewish character of the state takes precedence over purely civic identity.
21% of the population, Arab Israelis (Muslim, Christian, and Druze) navigate a unique and often painful duality.
They hold Israeli passports and vote in elections, but their cultural and national roots are tied to the broader Palestinian population. It is their ancestral home, but the state’s self-definition as explicitly Jewish can make them feel like second-class citizens or a neglected minority.
The reality:
While many actively participate in Israel’s economy, healthcare, and judicial systems, they often face a complex tension between their civic reality as Israelis and their solidarity with Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
For descendants of Jewish communities from Middle Eastern and North African countries) who make up over half of the Jewish population.
Historically sidelined by the early European-dominated (Ashkenazi) establishment, their cultural influence—from food and music to politics—is now central to modern mainstream Israeli life.
The core meaning:
A sanctuary from the anti-Jewish persecution in Arab lands during the mid-20th century, combined with a proud fusion of Middle Eastern warmth and Jewish tradition within the state’s identity.
Despite deep internal divides, a few universal experiences shape what Israel means to almost anyone who lives there:
Bayit (Home): Regardless of political ideology, there is a profound sense of familiarity and collective responsibility.
Israel feels less like a distant bureaucracy and more like a massive, noisy, extended family—for better and for worse.
Security & Resilience:
Because of constant geopolitics and compulsory military service for most Jewish citizens, the state represents absolute survival.
The core ethos remains: “We have nowhere else to go.”
Intensity & Immediacy:
Life in Israel moves fast. Debates are loud, personal boundaries are porous, and national events directly impact everyday personal decisions.
And you wonder why it’s so fucked up!
