(Eight-minute read)

Peace is “perpetual war.”       “Global” is imperial.

In today’s world, it is impossible to find a phenomenon that harms people more than war. While Trump Fiddles, Putin Steps Up the War in Ukraine

By now in our history, we all know that any war is to blame for people being killed.

It is not only military deaths but every living individual so you might be well asking why do we now have another war breaking out in Ukraine?

We all know that there are so many reasons for starting these wars that no appeal and no desire for peace will ever be heard if the authorities want so. Sometimes it simply is inevitable.

(This post is not to justify the out brake, rather try and understand why it is occurring in the first place.)

It’s not just that Putin has become a  “farce with fangs.” in reclaiming Crimea. More than 90 percent of the population of Crimea voted to return the territory to Russia.

The conflict in Ukraine started with the refusal of ex-president Viktor Yanukovich to sign the agreement of Ukraine’s association with the European Union. Thousands of people, shocked by his decision, went to the streets to show their willingness to become part of Europe and live a happier and wealthier life.

Most of us have no knowledge about Ukraine and it’s not possible to explain its history in this post.

However, most of us are still not quite sure what Ukraine was or is.

“Ukraine was a little bit like Ireland used to be within the United Kingdom” It was a subordinate part of a greater whole, of a greater empire.

“During the revolution that ushered in the Soviet Union, Ukraine fought for independence. It lost, and in 1922 was subsumed inside the communist state.

This was followed by Stalin creating  “The Holodomor an artificial famine,” to crush its people its language and culture. Just like the Irish Potato Famine known as the Great Hunger, which began in 1845 that saw millions of Irish either starve to death or immigrate. Stalin between 1932 and 1933, starved some four million Ukrainians to death.

The significance of the Potato Famine (or, in the Irish language, An Gorta Mor) in Irish history, and its contribution to the Irish diaspora of the 19th and 20th centuries, is beyond doubt still to this day.

“The attempt to eliminate Ukrainian-ness and the sense of it, of a separate identity and the sense of nationhood, has really been a Russian policy since the 19th century, but its sense of nationhood was growing stronger.

And now this disaster has befallen them and this feeling that they may be dragged back into some horrific Stalin-era or Czarist-era nightmare must be tormenting a lot of them.

                                  —————-

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States has ringed Russia with military bases, nuclear warplanes, and missiles as part of its Nato Enlargement Project. NATO has, in effect, militarily occupied eastern Europe.

In fact in the former Soviet Caucasus, Nato’s expansion is the biggest military build-up since the Second World War.

Imagine the response if these acts of provocation, or intimidation, were carried out on America’s borders.

“It’s a nice and convenient myth that liberals are peacemakers and conservatives the warmongers.”

The once hopeful concept of  “Russian reform” now means regression, even destruction. In Orwellian fashion, this has been inverted in the west to the “Russian threat”.

The Nuremberg prosecutor Robert Jackson called “the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole”

                                  —————————-

As a consequence, we have witnessed Iraq dismembered with between 97,461 and 106,348 civilian deaths up to July 2010.

(The US has lost 4,487 service personnel. Half a million Iraqi infants under the age of five make up the Iraq deaths.)

Syria flattened.  A decade of war in Syria has left more than 350,200 people dead.

Yemen. Almost a quarter of a million people have died in Yemen’s war.

Afghanistan, so far the war killed 176,000 people in Afghanistan; some 2,460 US military personnel and 51000 Taliban.

Israel/Palestine.  At least 10,316 Palestinians and 1,287 Israelis.

Myanmar. The Rohingya genocide.

“Behind each recorded death is a human being, born free and equal, in dignity and rights”.

Some sources say that the Soviet Union had over 20,000,000 casualties, in world war Two.

                             _________________

” Perhaps the imperialism of the liberal way may be more dangerous because of its open-ended nature: its conviction that it represents a superior form of life.”

It is “so widely accepted as to be virtually unchallengeable”.

In the modern era, the employment of ethnic differences in western power and propaganda systems is now seen as essential.

Today’s grand illusion is of an information age when, in truth, we live in a media age in which incessant corporate propaganda is insidious, contagious, effective, and liberal is creating a world of inequalities.

No Shelley speaks for the poor, no Blake for utopian dreams, no Byron damns the corruption of the ruling class, no Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin reveal the moral disaster of capitalism. William Morris, Oscar Wilde, HG Wells, George Bernard Shaw have no equivalents today.

“Austerity” is the imposition of extreme capitalism on the poor and the gift of socialism for the rich: an ingenious system under which the majority service the debts of the few.

It’s no wonder we have wars.

Artificial Intelligence., The Future of Mankind, THIS IS THE STATE OF THE WORLD.  , Visions of the future.

( Fifteen-minute read)

Up to now, we humans have tried everything to change the planet that we all live on – such as wipe out each other,  political systems,  cities,  religious beliefs, weapons of mass destruction, world organizations without any global clout, financial institutions manipulating power, money, elections, corruption, all enhancing inequality.

All are devoid of any asperation for peace and sharing. In fact, we have designed a world around the mantra  ” Pay as you go ” which includes all aspects of life even the privilege of paying for your own funeral.

In the meantime, Earth is never stationary it spins at 1000 miles per hour.

As Galileo Galilei said, “Nature is relentless and unchangeable, and it is indifferent as to whether its hidden reasons and actions are understandable to man or not.”

                                                  ————

The “New Earth” that people envisioned never quite materialized as predicted.

With the dramatic worldwide impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and now a new war in Ukraine, one could not be blamed for thinking what next rather than where next.

I suppose that eventually, we will reach a tipping point, after which we will consider 4D/5D things “normal”.

Maybe in the distant future  “enlightenment”, will be more about knowing yourself as the consciousness that is witnessing reality.

Creating one’s reality for life and the planet that we truly love in which we are fully conscious and in full control over everything that we experience in our subconscious reality. Even so, we will still not be in full control of what happens to us and the environment we are in, because of our collective inability to agree that we are all the same.

So where are we?

The most distinctive aspect of our approach is the lack of ‘long-term’ action.

Longterm is the idea that because such huge numbers of individuals might live in the long-run future, and because we think everyone’s interests matter equally, approaches to improving the world should be evaluated mainly in terms of their potential for long-term impact — over thousands, millions, or even billions of years.

In the 1950s, large-scale production of nuclear weapons meant that a few world leaders gained, for the first time, the ability to kill hundreds of millions of people.

This was a striking milestone in a robust trend: as technology improves and the world economy grows, it gets easier to cause destruction on an ever-larger scale.

This is where we are.

                                        ——————

When we look at the history of the human race, we see many examples of major moral problems that most people were completely oblivious to. These include slavery, the deplorable treatment of foreigners, the subjugation of women, the persecution of people who aren’t heterosexual, and the gross mistreatment of animals.

New transformative technologies may promise a radically better future, but also pose catastrophic risks, and mitigating these risks is presently all but totally ignored.  Work on mitigating many risks remains remarkably neglected — in some cases receiving attention from only a handful of researchers.

With machine learning, the fate of humanity may come to depend more on the actions of machines than our own. This could lead to large, rapid improvements in human welfare, but there are good reasons to think that it could also lead to disastrous outcomes.

The problem of how one might design a highly intelligent machine to pursue realistic human goals safely is very poorly understood. You might think ‘why can’t we just turn it off?’, but of course, an intelligent system will give every indication of doing exactly what we want, until it is certain we won’t be able to turn it off.

Even if advanced machine intelligence does not get ‘out of control’, it is likely to be very socially disruptive and could be used as a destabilizing weapon of war.

There have been surprisingly few serious attempts to make such big-picture comparisons.

There are many global issues we haven’t yet seen investigated much at all. These are not always the biggest problems in the world — rather they are the issues that receive little attention compared to how important they are and how much can be done about them.

Different problems could be bigger if there are problems that humanity hasn’t even thought of yet. And it seems likely that we haven’t discovered all the serious global problems which exist.

You might think by now that world politicians won’t be motivated to act on the results of global priorities.

I would say that if anyone is looking at the state of the world our focus should be more on oneness and unconditional love for all existence with a distinct set of rules about what you can and cannot do.

So here is the good news.

Humanity’s superior intelligence is pretty much the sole reason that it is the dominant species on the planet.

The chance of great power conflict this century was around 45%, now it’s 100% and the chance of an extinction-level war was around 1% it is now with technology a lot more than doubters cannot dismiss.

THE BEADY EYE ASKS. ARE WE NOW PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE

28 Monday Feb 2022

≈ Comments Off on THE BEADY EYE ASKS. ARE WE NOW PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE

(Two-minute read)

We all know that when a war breaks out it does not take much time for it to escalate.

The continued presence of US and Russian nonstrategic weapons on the European continent already poses a serious risk of “accidental use, miscalculation, and inadvertent escalation.

With Europe reduced to sanction spectator status in the face of a heightened possibility of a nuclear detonation on its doorstep. Even a cooperative European defense could do little to prevent a retaliatory nuclear response.

Imagine a scenario – as in the past – in which Moscow misinterprets a conventional missile flight as nuclear.

Nuclear risk reduction is a common security interest of all states – one that transcends alliances and umbrellas, and even the geopolitical circumstances that have stagnated arms control and disarmament.

Putin knows that a nuclear war would not only be the end it would also ensure the destruction of Russia.

At a time when the nuclear risk on the continent is acute, European states have every reason to take the lead.

The prospects for the possibility of nuclear weapons use in Europe, whether intentionally or inadvertently must be avoided at all costs.

So perhaps if Europe were to place all of its nonstrategic warheads in storage, this would allay the possibility that Moscow might misinterpret conventional missions in the first place.

Such a move by Europe would not send a message of weakness to Russia, rather it would give Putin a choice. Destroy Russia or not.

THE BEADY EYE ASKS. JUST HOW FUCKED UP IS THE WORLD WE LIVE ON?

State of the world, The Future of Mankind, THIS IS THE STATE OF THE WORLD.

(Six-minute read)

There has never been a period like this in the history of humanity.

The past 50 years of human activity caused massive losses in biodiversity, habitat, soil health, and air quality and the impacts are clear in every corner of the globe.

Overall, humans have now directly altered three-quarters of the globe and the rate of global extinction is estimated to be tens to hundreds of times higher now than at any prior moment in human history.

Life on earth is deteriorating fast.

Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) warns a million could be wiped out if humanity keeps delivering blows to nature. Even the status quo is untenable: an estimated 500,000 land species already don’t have sufficient habitat for long-term survival.

With the global population set to rise to 9 billion by 2050, conservation is about more than a touchy-feely walk in the vibes of the wood (though the report also shows enjoyment of nature is one of its undeniable benefits). It’s about ensuring everyone has enough to eat.

We have 12 years to drastically start drawing down emissions to prevent global warming from exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius, but we cannot tackle nature deterioration separately from climate change and our social goals.

I don’t think we – the modern people – can even survive a day without having access to the internet. The problem is, most people are sheep sitting on the sidelines through no fault of their own doing what everyone else does, supporting the status quo, and not stepping out of line.

Because most of the decision-making power in the world now belongs to a relative handful of idiots who want to empower themselves and disempower everyone else, the evolution of the human race has been held back for hundreds of years.

Evolution is the purpose of life, and the purpose of all non-living matter in the universe is to create the conditions under which life can evolve.

We, it seems are so busy creating such a fucked up world that nobody cares any longer.  When you hear politics speak they always mention stuff like health care, transportation, city infrastructure, human rights, free markets. Even though these things are of importance, they don’t set a path for others to follow in the long term.

The result is that Politics don’t have a clue what our future should look like. We all know what happens after the elections. The winning party hardly executes more than 30% of what they’ve promised.

For most people, the idea of long-term thinking is a luxury good with most of us finding it difficult these days to make both ends meet, thus we can’t afford to think about something pleasant in the future. Our idea about tomorrow narrows down to “what’s for dinner.”

Thanks to technology most of us are now living this hamster wheel life where we’re in constant pursuit of more things, but we never actually reach a state where we are truly satisfied.

Your desire to feel good now destroys each and every thought about a possible long-term project. Meaning, you scroll mindlessly on your phone where you see stuff you don’t have and you start wanting them. This loop becomes your ultimate habitat and your one purpose in life becomes feeling good all the time.

Unfortunately, there is no product or service that can make us happy all the time.

Up to recently, we live in a globalized world where everything seems possible then came Covid which has shown that nothing is possible without those things we take for granted.

Have we learned the Covid lesson? Not on your nelly. It has just made some Drug companies super-rich with I am all right jack syndrome countries.

I’d say that it’s not the world that’s fucked up, it’s people who are fucked up.

                          ————————-

In our hectic world where trivial content is spreading like a wildfire, we are preoccupied with trying not to drown in the vast ocean of poorly organized information corrupting our senses.

Not a future anyone wants but, unfortunately, everyone seems to have.

We’re not the only ones on this planet.

Is there any way to un fuck it?   Of course, there is.

There is only one thing that has happened on planet Earth, and it is still the only thing happening here, just as it is the only thing that has ever happened, or will happen, in the entire universe, and that one thing is… evolution.

So what should we do?

Capitalism must be saved from its own excesses.

We should keep our technology but do away with the things that enslave us.  We should enshrine common goals of what would be in the interest of the country in law.

A different yardstick than profits:

The capitalist vehicle in which humanity is progressing must be redesigned. It is putting too much pressure on the Earth’s resources. It is leaving too many people behind with inequality.

Different ownership:

Who owns the enterprise?  The people at the bottom, or people at the top of the economy?

We need innovations in production models that provide more jobs so that business is not only for the people but by the people too.

We need to rethink the purpose of the corporation. Serve the people or profit. The idea of who owns the enterprise by taking a broader view of the benefits companies provide to societies, one may conclude that the private sector is not all good and that the public sector is not all bad.

Community-owned – genuinely ‘social enterprises’, with clear public purposes, with limitations on the returns their investors can get, and with transparency in their accounts to the public of the value they create for society, could be partners with governments in providing some public services.

The expansion of government to its present scale has politicalized virtually all economic life. The wages being paid most workers today are political wages, reflecting political pressures rather than anything that might be considered the normal working of supply and demand. The prices farmers receive are political prices. The profits business is earning are political profits. The savings people hold have become political savings, since their real value is subject to abrupt depreciation by political decisions.

We should remove private enterprises from making profits from the essentials of life – water – energy –  transport – health – education

The entire “reason for being” for capitalist-based entities, is the maximization of profit for the ownership of the company or corporation.

With the result that many of us view life as simply a struggle for survival, and sadly, for many people, that’s all it is.

Technology:

We should ensure that technology does not enslave us.

                              ————————-

You can take this post however you’d like, not everyone thinks the same as I do, and I understand that. But, you can’t deny that this world is a tad bit messed up and it’s only getting worse.

Fortunately, there is a way out.

If you want to make a change, start caring more about others. No matter what you’re doing.

There is no reason that allowing all of us to invest in the future by issuing Green Bonds would not be a step in the right direction. ( See previous posts)  It would allow us to address and finance the changes needs fairly, giving all of us a stake in the future.

Global cooperation towards a sustainable future.

Of course, the above is only words but the way we are going it would not surprise me to hear Donate a pound to save a Ukrainian.

THE BEADY EYE ASKS. WHAT WILL THE NEXT CLIMATE CONFERENCE ACHIVE?

(Three-minute read)

IF ANYTHING THE FAILURE OF THE LAST MEETING.

Cop 26 was at best a very human flawed attempt to deal with a problem of our own making.

The final pledges on the table are not in line with the goal of the Paris Agreement to hold the rise in warming to well below 2 Celsius degrees, and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 Celsius degrees.

Why?

Because:

All Things Considered, it had little to offer on the hope front.

The conference was not about climate change but greenwashing on behalf of the conference sponsors.

The concept of loss and damage, where rich countries pay poorer nations for the destruction already caused by climate change, remains an idea rather than a reality in the document.

Because the conference treated indigenous groups as helpless victims.

If any of us is to continue, we will have to learn from those closest to the land and the sea what it is we really want, as opposed to what the jolly global greenwashing festival is trying to sell us.

We all — governments, financial institutions, individuals, and companies — now need to change and step up to address this challenge. As countries transition to green energy, a deadly race for global power begins.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been selected to host the COP28 international climate conference in 2023.

It will be the third time the talks are hosted by a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Former OPEC member Qatar hosted in 2012 and Indonesia did in 2007. The hypoxia of it all is beyond belief.

Crude Oil Production in the United Arab Emirates increased to 2833 BBL/D/1K in October from 2786 BBL/D/1K in September of 2021. Dubai alone was built on the back of an oil and real-estate boom.

Long live the sponsors.

THE BEADY EYE SAYS. TOMORROW IS NO LONGER A PROMISE.

The Earth's Atmosphere.

(Five-minute read)

We are born, walk, sleep, live and die under the Earth’s atmosphere, but most of us have no idea as to what it is.

The atmosphere upon which life depends was created by life itself.

Without it, we would be living on a lifeless husk.

The atmosphere is everything above the Earth’s surface, reaching straight upwards roughly 10,000 km (6,214 miles) into space.

Everything beyond this distance is considered to be outer space.

The bulk of the atmosphere is placed close to Earth’s surface up to a distance of roughly eight to 15 kilometers.

It has five different layers,

The Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere.

There is no definite boundary between the atmosphere and space.

The troposphere is the layer closest to Earth’s surface, which is around 7 to 20 km thick and comprises half of Earth’s atmosphere. 90% of the Ozone layer is here the protective shield against radiation. This is the layer that returning capsules glow as the capsules are heated in a superheated shroud of incandescent plasma.

The stratosphere is the second layer within the layers of the atmosphere. It starts surpassing the troposphere and ends about 31 miles over the ground.

The mesosphere begins at 31 miles and extends to about 53 miles high.

The thermosphere is known to be the second-highest layer of the atmosphere which extends from 56 miles to between 310 and 620 miles.

The exosphere is known to be the highest layer of the atmosphere, which is extremely thin. It is where the atmosphere joins forces with outer space. The exosphere contains many of the satellites orbiting Earth.

Earth’s atmosphere consists of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.03% carbon dioxide, and 0.9% argon with tiny percentages of other elements. Our atmosphere is also comprised of water vapor. Besides, Earth’s atmosphere comprises the remnants of dust particles, pollen, plant grains, and other solid particles.

Fortunately for us, Earth’s gravity is strong enough to hold onto its atmosphere.

The earth-atmosphere energy balance is the balance between incoming energy from the Sun and outgoing energy from the Earth.

Because we are increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by continuing to burn fossil fuels, even in relatively small amounts compared to the entire mass of the atmosphere, we are disturbing the entire heat balance of the planet.

We add carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone along with the filtered air which comprises trace amounts of many other chemical compounds.

ITS NO WONDER THAT predicting the consequences of global warming is one of the most difficult tasks for the world’s climate researchers.

It is also difficult to predict the size of the emissions of greenhouse gases in the coming decades as this can be influenced by political decisions and technological advancements.

It is not difficult to predict the results of a temperature increase. ( See the previous post)

That Are Happening Right Now.

Sadly, most people don’t even realize what is happening, and that is because

the mainstream media only emphasizes stories that fit with the particular

narratives that they are currently pushing.

The demands of life can often cause us to focus on things that don’t really matter.  Hopefully, we can get more people to wake up while there is still time because the clock is ticking for humanity and for our planet as a whole.

THE BEADY EYE SAYS: COP26 WILL TURN OUT TO BE THE MOST EXPENSIVE COP OUT THAT THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. .

10 Wednesday Nov 2021

Posted by bobdillon33@gmail.com in Uncategorized

≈ Comments Off on THE BEADY EYE SAYS: COP26 WILL TURN OUT TO BE THE MOST EXPENSIVE COP OUT THAT THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. .

(Five-minute read)

1.5 apparently has not yet been reached and to many experts, the 1.5°C target appears to be out of reach.

Words, Pledges, Agreements, Strong Statements, and inductive thinking, will do nothing to stop Climate Change.

So as the planet perhaps inevitably closes in on and goes beyond that 1.5°C target, it’s reasonable to wonder how a world with “just” that degree of warming would compare with a world where global temperatures rise by 2°C or more above preindustrial levels.

(Keep in mind that there’s no science suggesting that the warming of the planet’s atmosphere will magically stop at that 2°C limits; indeed, just the opposite).

Every bit of warming matters.

About 14% of the world’s population would be exposed to extreme heat waves once every five years if global temperature increases are held to 1.5°C; that percentage jumps to 37% with a rise of 2°C.

  • With a 1.5°C increase, extremely hot days in the mid-latitudes will be 3°C hotter (5.4°F) than pre-industrial levels.
  •
  • With a 2°C increase, extremely hot days in the mid-latitudes will be about 4°C hotter (7.2°F) than pre-industrial levels.
  •
  • With a 1.5°C increase, sea levels are projected to rise by 2100 by 0.26 to 0.77 meters (0.85-2.52 feet) relative to 1986-2005.
  •
  • With a 2°C increase, sea levels are projected to rise by 2100 by 0.36 to 0.87 meters (1.18-2.85 feet) relative to 1986-2005.
  •
  •
  • With a 1.5°C increase, 6 percent of insects, 8 percent of plants, and 4 percent of vertebrates are projected by 2100 to lose more than half of their climatically determining geographic range.
  •
  • With a 2°C increase, those percentages double or triple: 18 percent of insects, 16 percent of plants, and 8 percent of vertebrates are projected by 2100 to lose more than half of their climatically determining geographic range.
  •
  • With a 1.5°C increase, scientists project that the Arctic Ocean will become ice-free in the summer about once every 100 years.
  •
  • With a 2°C increase, the Arctic Ocean could become ice-free in the summer once every 10 years.
  •
  • With a 1.5°C increase, coral reefs around the world are projected to decline further by 70-90 percent.
  •
  • With a 2°C increase, coral reefs are projected to decline by more than 99 percent — an irreversible loss in many marine and coastal ecosystems.
  •
  • With a 1.5°C increase, one global model cited by the U.N. report projects a decrease in the global annual catch for marine fisheries of about 1.5 million metric tonnes.
  •
  • With a 2°C increase, the same model projects a decrease of more than 3 million metric tonnes.

Compared with a rise of 2°C, limiting warming to 1.5°C could reduce the number of people worldwide exposed to climate-related risks and resulting poverty by hundreds of millions fewer people.

The notion that humans could override nature is absurd.

To limit warming to 1.5°C, global net greenhouse gas emissions from human activity must decline by about 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030, and reach net zero by 2050. To limit warming to 2°C, emissions must decline by about 25 percent by 2030 and reach net zero by about 2070.

The money is only about one-third of the amount the IEA says is needed to put the world on track to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

It has been being clear that since 1978, global warming has become even more apparent.

Almost everything these days are presented to us in a way that’s supposed to get us to consume something.

Every result that shows up in Cop26 has been caused by certain actions that were taken in the past.  That means that we’re constantly living in the residue caused by our thoughts and actions in the past.

After 25 Cop summits have achieved zero as we have not yet discovered the laws that control any given circumstance to stop climate change.

The bottom line is that if you don’t like the effect of the actions that you’ve taken in the past, then alter your actions to create a better future.

Poverty and prosperity are opposite poles of the same thing. 1.5 and 2.4 are not.

THE BEADY EYE SAYS: COP26 IS YET TO GRASP THE NETTLE BY THE NECK.

06 Saturday Nov 2021

≈ Comments Off on THE BEADY EYE SAYS: COP26 IS YET TO GRASP THE NETTLE BY THE NECK.

( Four-minute read)

To grasp the nettle Cop26 has to realize that there can be no compromises with the Climate.

This is not a negotiation with each other.  There is another unspoken negotiation going on too – called compromises which are fundamentally unambitious when it comes to Climate Change.

Reducing carbon emissions, improving the food supply and demand imbalance, and reducing water shortages: are the three biggest challenges that the world is currently facing.

At the current temperature rate, we have just 12 years to make a difference.

Public government finances are not enough to fund efforts to keep a global temperature rise below two degrees.

By 2030, by 2070, and by, by do not grasp that it is now we need to ensure your money is tied up ethically, sustainably, and responsibly so it will go a long way to alleviate the increasing effects of climate change, and the subsequent challenges it brings.

To meet growing demand, we need more food, resources, water, and energy and this increase in the use of resources presents global challenges that can not be met by public finances.

So the onus is on the financial sector to make strides for climate change, but most of the fund offerings within the sustainability or environmental space are mainly equity-only strategies.

This poses a significant challenge only in cost but in investment.

It is now that we need to invest in a green economic world that is brimming with prosperity – something that is only expected to rise in the future as the world moves towards a necessarily sustainable society.

Growth is the key reason for general investor interest in sustainability and environmental themes.

One only has to look at sovereign wealth funds investing more and more in the green economy.

Most end-markets in the sustainability space are expected to grow annually at double-digit rates over the next three to five years compared to low single-digit in most developed economies.

So why not now invest sustainably by issuing Green bonds with remuneration in order to provide a clear incentive to drive this change.

They will not just provide financial rewards, but environmental ones, too.

COP26 MIGHT BE THE MOST COMPLEX NEGOTIATION EVER ATTEMPTED.

Why?

Because humans are helplessly reciprocal creatures and without realizing it we mirror each other in what we say and how we say it.

Negotiations are rarely about the issue we’re talking about.

Try compromising with this lot.

The temperature rise has not been, and will not be, uniform or smooth across the country or over time.

Increased heavy precipitation events will continue.

Heat waves (periods of abnormally hot weather lasting days to weeks) everywhere are projected to become more intense.

Hurricane-associated storm intensity and rainfall rates are projected to increase as the climate continues to warm.

Sea level rise will continue past 2100 because the oceans take a very long time to respond to warmer conditions at the Earth’s surface.

The Arctic Ocean is expected to become essentially ice-free in summer before mid-century.

Global climate is projected to continue to change over this century and beyond.

The effects of human-caused global warming are happening now, are irreversible on the timescale of people alive today, and will worsen in the decades to come.

So we must figure out new ways of working together to create a sustainable world.

THE BEADY EYE SAYS WATCH THIS SPACE. THE UK IS GOING TO BALK ON ITS TRADE DEAL WITH THE EU USING NORTHERN IRELAND AS THE ESCAPE GOAT.

≈ Comments Off on THE BEADY EYE SAYS WATCH THIS SPACE. THE UK IS GOING TO BALK ON ITS TRADE DEAL WITH THE EU USING NORTHERN IRELAND AS THE ESCAPE GOAT.

( Fifteen-minute read)

The 1998 Belfast Agreement was supposed to bring peace to the province.  In reality, it institutionalized sectarianism by setting up a consociational regime, which, like Lebanon, rewards the hardest communal politicians.

UK-EU trade deal came into force on 1 January 2021.

The deal prevented any tariffs and quotas from being introduced – which would have made it more expensive to trade, but as the UK no longer has to follow EU rules on product standards, new checks were introduced.

However, this deal called the Northern Ireland protocol doesn’t completely eliminate the possibility of tariffs in the future.

If either the UK or the EU shifts their rules too far, the other side could introduce tariffs.

The Northern Ireland protocol keeps Northern Ireland in the EU single market for goods and means EU customs rules are enforced at its ports – but it is strongly opposed among unionists, who see it as separating Northern Ireland from the UK.Protest

At the moment the protocol is part of the Brexit deal and so far the fundamentals of the agreement remain unquestioned.

Why?

Because Boris Johnson will not want a row over Northern Ireland with the EU to overshadow the Cop26 climate change summit in Glasgow.

                                                  ——–

The DUP is a strange organization for those not familiar with the intricacies of Irish politics.

It began in the outer fringes of fundamentalist evangelicalism when Ian Paisley, the party’s founder, claimed that the leaders of the main Protestant churches were failing to stand up to “Romanism” and “papism”.

This allowed the DUP to become the dominant force in unionism, replacing the Ulster Unionist Party, which had ruled over the six counties since the state’s foundation.

40 percent of the DUP’s councilors and a third of its elected representatives in the Legislative Assembly are members of the Free Presbyterian church—a denomination that makes up only 0.6 percent of the total population.

They are Christian fundamentalists who still play a big role in the party, and their religious views coincide neatly with their right-wing political positions.

At the core of its politics is a veneration of the queen as a defender of the Protestant faith and the imperial past.

This loyalty is to a “form of national-imperial Britishness whose origins remain strongly associated with a bygone age”

Fortunately, modern Britain is a multicultural society—despite efforts to promote nostalgia for empire—where most of the population has little relationship to the Protestant churches. Nonetheless, this never stops the DUP from yearning for a restoration of old imperial glory.

On this basis, it aligned itself with the hardest Brexiteers in the Tory Party during the 2016 European Union referendum campaign and propped up Theresa May’s government after the 2017 general election in Britain.

The DUP backed Brexit for two reasons.

Firstly, it thought that a clean break with the EU would put an end to any drift towards a 32 county Ireland because the two parts of the country would be governed by different economic arrangements.

Secondly, it supported the Tory fantasy that a fully sovereign Britain would be better able to restore both its “greatness” and its imperial tradition.

                                                     ———–

In the case of the DUP, this weakness lies in the very nature of its claim to British identity.

The queen is more widely seen as a soap opera matriarch than as the “defender of the faith”. The “Britishness” that plays such a central role in loyalist ideology barely exists in reality.

In the real world, Northern Ireland is one of the most contentious and defining conflicts of the twenty century and one whose impact is still felt today with its roots stretching back to the Anglo-Norman settlement of Ireland in 1167 the history of which shows no matter how dressed up shows that the island of Ireland was once a United Island before the partition of its six northern provinces.

Since then the process of ‘Ulsterization’ occurred, with decades of violence in Northern Ireland have been followed by the possibility of unity through political ends.

Irish unionism itself undergoing a profound transformation through, conflict and removal of religious domination in the South.

Brexit and the continuing difficulties in agreeing on the future EU-UK relationship has however fundamentally changed political opinion in Northern Ireland, where Irish unity is now a means by which Northern Ireland can avoid the post-Brexit chaos and re-enter the European Union.

The possibility of unity referenda in a five-to-10-year timeframe is now very real.

If this were to happen big questions would have to be answered first.

How would a united Ireland integrate public services such as health, welfare, education, policing, or infrastructural development?

So political and cultural positions are likely to be more important in the

coming months. “How can you unite this island when in Northern Ireland  the

DUP ensures that the population of NI remains divided and segregated?

Comprehensive support in the Republic for a united Ireland will only be achieved if there is an emerging consensus in Northern Ireland, with almost 1 million Unionists agreeing to enter into dialogue.

Nor can that path cannot come through the politics of Sinn Fein.

A return to the Troubles in the North, rather than any UK demand for the European Court of Justice to lose oversight of the implementation of EU law in Northern Ireland is a tough ask for Brussels.

It is an unacceptable price for Irish unity.

As with most problems in the world today we can talk, write, post till the cows come home.

Brexit now tragically risks driving a horse and coach what was agreed in the Good Friday agreement

To use a cliche we have to learn from the past.

The youth of NI, the post ceasefire generation have probably little idea of where it all came from, why it came, and why in the end there has to be an agreed solution.

So in the context of a unified Ireland.

If northern Ireland’s economy improves with adjustment to the current protocol so that it simply reflects average Irish economic performance within the EU no Uk 10 bn subventions will be needed, and a united Ireland of some kind will have to agree by Unionists and nationalists.

So far, the UK has signed trade deals and agreements in principle with 68 countries and one with the EU.

The majority are “rollover” deals – copying the terms of deals the UK already had when it was an EU member, rather than creating new benefits.
