No matter whether we are ten or twelve years away from AI Robots or Quantum Computing.

The impact of AI will be vast.

We need to start controlling whatever AI is capable of doing, if not, what we do, what we see, or hear, will be controlled by AI.

Ai is not going to be disturbed with any equality.

It will without doubt be used for both good and evil.

It will probably cause economic collapse.

—————-

We need to establish a WORLD AI COURT before it’s totally beyond human comprehension.

This technology revolution that we all currently witnessing on a daily basis is presently non regulated,, with increasing inbuilt biases. If allowed to continue you may rest assured the scientific fiction we see on our phones, movies etc will be the future, with us humans having no say or recourse.

The question is how do we humans set the foundation for such a court, and how to enforce its ruling.

The answer is that all software, using Ai must by law lodge a copy of its program software to be held like the seed bank in a world vault. To ensure that we humans have recourse when AI is emboldened to make decisions effecting human life .

Where or what World organisation should govern such control such a vault?

I would suggest the United Nations with no veto to stop the release of any codes held in the AI vault to the court.

Any AI software can then be examined by a computer program that has the values of humanity at its heart.

Social media already dominated the World. It’s full of AI generated images, and false information which is totally unregulated tearing the truth apart.

If you don’t believe me just look at Grot 4

We in a global war for truth.

AI is not artificial.

It’s an intelligent totally different from human intelligence and as such should not be compared to evolutionarily human advancement.

An algorithmic bot is not a robot it’s a digital code of instructions to follow to achieve a specific target.

Ai is a net work of algorithms on a platform.

Quantum chips will take computing to the next level of artificial intelligence’s, with quantum information that only the computer will understand.

We all know that if our kids are constantly looking at computers I pads laptops and mobile devices we’re heading for a generation of fat kids with huge backsides.

Already we have over 208million Americans classified as obese.

Just imagine.

If it took millions of years for us to evolve but Robots without outside help will evolve at speeds not yet seen.

We are getting close to a world under constant surveillance thanks to the very thing I am using this very second – A Mobil phone.

It’s now impossible to live without constant contact with a computer, that is feeding of your personal and non personal data.

The ability of algorithms to analyse all this information is really beyond our comprehension.

The ability to make decisions must be within our capabilities, not with algorithms.

If we to have lives worth living, all technological advancement must be subjected to upholding human values.

This can only be achieved if we humans pass laws to regulate all social media platforms.

They all must be able to verify their content as genuine fact, not computer generated tripe.

Human if you have not noticed are inextricably connected to the earth not artificial intelligence.

It’s time to shift to a war time mindset when it comes to profit seeking algorithms and computers decide our lives.

Our smartphone accomplish the job 24/7

It’s simple unacceptable that they suck the life out of living for profit, while remaining un- transparent, un- unconscious, unethical, untrustworthy, untrainable.

The grow apathy about Ai, the state of the world drags on. It’s now or never or tomorrow will not arrive.

There is no deal to be had with Ai.

THE BEADY EYE ASK’S: WILL A QUANTUM COMPUTER SOLVE THE WORLD PROBLEMS?

( Five minute read)

We have very limited ability at this stage to imagine the applications of quantum computing, but down the road in the near term they could solve countless problems – and create a lot of new ones.

In order to prepare for what is coming.

Educate ourselves on the reality of Quantum Computers, and the impacts they could have around the world is now paramount if we wish to keep the values we place on life.

Soon will come a time when trusting a quantum computer will require a leap of faith.

Every year, new computers are being developed that are faster and smarter than ever before. But if you really want to take things to the next level, you’ve got to go quantum.

This new frontier of humanity could open hitherto unfathomable frontiers in mathematics and science.

Quantum’s industrial uses are boundless.

In the future, we will rely on everywhere in the world having access to quantum technology, but with risks, to national-security migraine. Its problem-solving capacity will soon render all existing cryptography obsolete, jeopardizing communications, financial transactions, and even military defences.

Modern warfare and national–security mechanisms are grounded in the speed and precision of decision making. If your computer is faster than theirs, you win.

The digital devices in our everyday lives – from laptop computers to smartphones – are all based on 0s and 1s: so-called ‘bits’. But quantum computers are based on ‘qubits’ – the quantum 0s and 1s that are altogether stranger, but also more powerful. (So-called quantum particles can be in two places at the same time and also strangely connected even though they are millions of miles apart.)

They will pave the way for systems that can solve complex real world problems that the best computers we have today are incapable of.Entanglement

Currently, computers solve problems in a simple linear way, one calculation at a time.

A quantum computers could do multiple calculations all at the same time, millions of miles apart, mirroring each other’s actions instantaneously, transporting information from one chip to another with a reliability of 99.999993% at record speeds.

——-

Now that we understand what AI is capable of we also need to know its limits.

Before long, much of the material on the internet will have been written, or at least co-written, by AIs.

What will happen when AIs are being trained on texts they have written themselves?

The amount of data consumed in this way keeps going up and up.

What happens when data runs out?

——-

Generative AI is in a Cambrian explosion of capability.

Generative Ai, is now creating art, make music, generate synthetic humans, birth artificial influencers and celebrities, literally generate video from text, and threaten to upend our notions of creativity, art, public domain, copyright, and the nature of reality itself.

This is just the beginning, the ultimate thing for AI to create is more of itself.

When maybe AI is also at the point where it can start writing the code that will make its own AI even better.  And that’s like where the true singularity is … when it can kind of set itself to improve itself, when it can start to improve itself better than what a human can.

It’s impossible to speculate what society could truly look like in such a situation.

But I think in most of our lifetimes we’re going to experience that. Exciting is one word for that.

Another is terrifying.  Machines that can outthink humans. Your brain is the most intelligent learning algorithm in the universe that we know so far. The truth is that for now, AGI remains a fantasy.

Even if AGI is never achieved, the self-teaching approach may still change what sorts of AI are created.

The rapid development of AI that can train itself also raises questions about how well we can control its growth. If AI starts to generate intelligence by itself, there’s no guarantee that it will be human-like.

Whether this will happen, and how it will progress if it does is impossible to know, but there’s no guarantee that humanity as we know it would survive such a time, or that the vast AI entities potentially created by such an explosion would be benevolent to life as we know it.

I think that really where AI can be empowering is in that long tail when there’s like non-consumption with the alternative, where you could not afford to create that content in the first place.

And you can imagine that with like these very obscure topics.

You could even imagine that for news where maybe there’s something that happened in your local neighbourhood where only 20 people want to read that article and then it doesn’t make sense for a human to write it.

Generating artificial intelligence is all ready producing images like a photographer, creating music like an artist, selling like a sales rep, diagnosing disease like a doctor, and (gulp!) writing text like a human.

The technology could potentially also be used to design drugs more quickly by accurately simulating their chemical reactions, a calculation too difficult for current supercomputers. They could also provide even more accurate systems to forecast weather and project the impact of climate change.

Rather than humans teaching machines to think like humans, machines might teach humans new ways of thinking.

( A Thirty-minute read)  Do you have a right to believe what you want? Yes, of course, but we now live in an Algorithmic driven world that is blurring the boundaries and amplifying the social tensions that are festering under the surface.  The problem is that we are allowing the building of technologies, that are making consequential decisions about people’s lives. AI is shaping people’s lives on a daily basis, but it’s an open question whether AI will become a trusted advisor or even a corrupting force.

It’s not COVID-19 that will kill us all its Profit-seeking algorithms.

However, here in this post, my main concern is whether the AI techniques will develop into quantum algorithms that will be totally out of control.  If artificial general intelligence is on the not too distant horizon, surely we should be ensuring that it is not owned by anyone corporation and that at its core it respects our core values. To achieve this we cannot surely let wealth be concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, or to be let to the marketplace, or any world organization that is not totally transparent and self-financing. We therefore as a matter of grave urgency need a new world organization that vets all technology, and algorithms. (See previous posts) As long as the ALGORITHMS don’t go to war with each other and cause something even more difficult to diagnose than a crash on the stock markets they are safe is as naive as saying ” It’s going to be Great.” AlGORITHMS are increasingly in charge of a world that is precious to us all. Basically, we’re entering the era of machines controlling everything. If we want to create new different societies with human dignity for all we need to do something about it. The difficulty of predicting the future is not just a cliche, it’s a basic fact of our existence. Part of the hypothesis of Singularity is that this difficulty is just going to get worse and worse. Yes, creating AGI ( Artificial General Intelligence) is a big and difficult goal, but according to known science, it is almost surely an achievable one. However, there are sound though not absolutely confident arguments that it may well be achievable within our lifetimes. If artificial general intelligence is on the not too distant horizon, surely we should be ensuring that it is not owned by anyone corporation and that at its core it respects our core values. If we think in months we focus on immediate problems such as the present-day wars, the Covid crisis, the Donald Trumps, the economy, if we think in decades, climate, growing inequality, the loss of jobs to automation are all presenting dangers. But if we look at life in total, science is converging on data processing and AI that is developing itself with algorithms. When intelligence is approached in an incremental manner, with strict reliance on interfacing to the real world through perception and action, reliance on representation disappears. It won’t be long before we will not be unable to distinguish the real world from the virtual world. Since there is only one real world and there can be infinite virtual worlds the probability that you will inhabit this sole world is zero.  So it won’t matter whether computers will be conscious or not. Is starting to feel like it’s every man for himself, Is possible that right now, a global crisis is upon us, Without even knowing… And the virus may not be the biggest threat, but the crisis that follows, Everyday goods that keep us alive will be gone, I’m talking, food, freshwater, medicine, clothes, fuel… Intelligence is decoupling from consciousness and soon rather than later it will be consigned to Google, Facebook, Twitter, Smartphones, and the like to make decisions that are not possible to reverse.  You might think that the above is stupid but it won’t be long before we will be witnessing the most unequal societies in history.                                  —————————— We humans will soon be living with robots that process data without any subjective experiences or consciousness or moral opprobrium. As we watch robots, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence machines, and the like slowly (and sometimes rapidly) permeate our world, it’s not hard to imagine them going from permeating to taking over. Algorithms are increasingly determining our collective future. It will only matter what they think about you. We are already halfway towards a world where algorithms run everything. This is why many of the issues raised in this post will require close monitoring, to ensure that the oversight of machine learning-driven algorithms continues to strike an appropriate and safe balance between recognizing the benefits (for healthcare and other public services, for example, and for innovation in the private sector) and the risks (for privacy and consent, data security and any unacceptable impacts on individuals).                                     —————————— WHAT CAN GOVERNMENTS DO?  Please regulate AI, this is too dangerous. Given the international nature of digital innovation, governments, should establish audits of algorithms, introducing certification of algorithms, and charging ethics boards with oversight of algorithmic decisions. Why? They are bringing big changes in their wake. From better medical diagnoses to driverless cars, and within central governments where there are opportunities to make public services more effective and achieve long-term cost savings. However, the Government should produce, publish, and maintain a list of where algorithms with significant impacts are being used within the Central Government, along with projects underway or planned for public service algorithms, to aid not just private sector involvement but also transparency. Governments should not just simply accept what the developers of algorithms offer in return for data access. To this end, Governments should be at the forefront of the creation of a “statutory building code”, which describes mandatory safety and quality requirements for digital platforms. Social networks should be required by law to release details of their algorithms and core functions to trusted researchers, in order for the technology to be vetted. This Law should enable the enforcement of,
  • forcing social networks to disclose in the news feed why content has been recommended to a user.
  • limiting the use of micro-targeting advertising messages.
  • making it illegal to exclude people from content on the basis of race or religion, such as hiding a spare room advert from people of color.
  • banning the use of so-called dark patterns – user interfaces designed to confuse or frustrate the user, such as making it hard to delete your account.
  • labeling the accounts of state-controlled news organizations.
  • limiting how many times messages can be forwarded to large groups, as Facebook does on WhatsApp.
If we took the premise that people should have a lawful right to be manipulated and deceived, we wouldn’t have rules on fraud or undue influence.                                 ———————————– To days Algorithms and where we are. As data accumulates, even more so now with Covid- 19 track and trace, and now working from home we have more centralized data depositories and large centralized AI models that work off centralized or decentralized data. How does the concentration of power affect this balance that impinges on individual liberty? Our democratic institutions and public discourse are underpinned by an assumption that we can at least agree on things that are true. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube create algorithms that promote and highlight information. That is an active engineering decision. Regardless of whether Facebook, Twitter profits from hate or not, it is a harmful by-product of the current design and there are social harms that come from this business model. Platforms that monetize user engagement have a duty to their users to make at least a minimum effort to prevent clearly identified harms. We have to focus on the responsibility of platforms. Because people are being manipulated with objectively false information, there has to be some kind of accountability for platforms. Currently, these platforms are not neutral environments they have no common understanding that there are certain things that are manifestly true with algorithms making decisions about what people see or do not see. In most Western democracies, you do have the freedom of speech. But freedom of speech is not an entitlement to reach. You are free to say what you want, within the confines of hate speech, libel law, and so on. But you are not entitled to have your voice artificially amplified by technology. The way Facebook and other platforms approach this problem is: We’ll wait and see and figure out a problem when it emerges. Every other industry has to have minimum safety standards and consider the risks that could be posed to people, through risk mitigation and prevention. There are right now some objectively disprovable things spreading quite rapidly on Facebook. For example, that Covid does not exist and that the vaccine is actually to control the minds of people. These are all things that are manifestly untrue, and you can prove that. However, algorithms are much more prevalent than that- the Apple Face ID algorithm decides whether you are who you say you are. Algorithms limit people’s worldview, which can allow large population groups to be easily controlled. Social Media algorithms tuned to your desires and want’s ensures that everything on your feed will be of interest to you without you knowing what data these algorithms use and what they aim for. Conclusion.  We are already living with large AI platforms that are monopolizing the fruits of globalization with billions being left behind. With us accepting this as if natural.
  • It will be too late when we are asking ourselves. What’s more valuable – intelligence or consciousness? Then ask yourselves what happens to society, politics, and daily life when non-conscious but highly intelligent algorithms know us better than we know ourselves?
  • Whatever view one takes on artificial intelligence ethics. You can rest assured that we will see far more nut cases blowing themselves up, far more wars over finite resources, with vast movements of people.
We have to remember that self-regulation is not the same as having no regulation. Of course, the loudest arguments for and against something often have one thing in common. They are often made by people with no desire to compromise or understand the other side. I think self-regulation, in and of itself contemplates people in power, deciding how they will act. We have to accept from history that we cannot possibly predict all adverse consequences of technology and that’s because it is not just technology that has adverse consequences, but the context in which is applied, It is impossible to regulate AI while thinking about all of its potential adverse consequences.  The seeds for harm at the design stage, or at the development stage, or at the deployment stage. We don’t have to wait for the technology to become an application before we think of regulating it effectively.  There is a need to strengthen specific provisions to safeguard individual liberty and community rights when it comes to inferred data. There is a need to balance the trade-offs between the utility of AI and protecting privacy and data.  Self-regulation within the AI industry may not be enough since it may not solve the massive differential between the people developing the technology and the people affected by it. Machine learning is the next step that they are aiming for, with the algorithms deciding the input and output completely. Inherent political and economic power hierarchies between the state and citizens and within the private sector need to be addressed because the promise of globalization is a lie when it comes to AI and prosperity for all. Algorithms are being used in an ever-growing number of areas, in ever-increasing ways, however, like humans, they can produce bias in their results, even if unintentional. We are all becoming redundant with biotechnology becoming only available to the riches of us. I don’t think that AI per se can be regulated because today it is AI, tomorrow it will be Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality, and the day after tomorrow it may be something that we can’t even think of right now. So it is important to have checks and balances in the use and access to AI that go beyond just technological means. Why? Because they are also moving into areas where the benefits to those applying them may not be matched by the benefits to those subject to their ‘decisions’—in some aspects of the criminal justice system, for example. However, technology companies are not all the same, and nor is technology the only part of the media ecosystem. It is essential to ensure a whole society response to tackle these important issues. You could require algorithms to have a trigger TO SHUT OF – to stop misinformation or terrorist groups using social media as a recruiting platform. BUT who defines what counts as misinformation? It is no longer possible for humans to fact-check so the only course of action is a world Independent Universal Algorithm that is designed to establish fairness.  While “fairness” is much vaguer than “life or death,” I believe it can – and should – be built into all AI using their algorithm. Therefore every Social network should display a correction to every single person who was exposed to misinformation if independent fact-checkers identify a story as false. (Google’s search algorithm is more closely guarded than classified secret documents with  Google Algorithm’s that now owns most of the largest data sets in the world stored in its cloud.)                                        ——————– We now have algorithms fighting with each other for supremacy on the market, prey on other algorithms in order to blunder the world exchanges for profit to such an extent that they now effectively in control of capitalism.  Take for instance, when someone says algorithmic trading, it covers a vast subject not just buying and selling large volumes of shares automatically at very high speeds by unsupervised learning algorithms. There are four major types of trading algorithms.  There are:
  • Execution algorithms
  • Behavior exploitative algorithms
  • Scalping algorithms
  • Predictive algorithms
Transparency must be a key underpinning for algorithm accountability. Why? Because it will make it easier for the decisions produced by algorithms to be explained.  (The ‘right to explanation’ is a key part of achieving accountability and tackling the ethical implications around AI.) We are only on the outskirts of mind science that presently knows little about how the mind works never mind consciousness.  We have no idea how a collection of electric brain signals creates subjective experiences however we are conscious of our dreams. 99% of our bodily activities take place without any conscious feelings. As neuroscientists acquired more and more data about the workings of the brain, cognitive sciences, and their stated purpose is to combine the data from numerous disciplines so as better to understand such diverse phenomena as perception, language, reasoning, and consciousness. Even so, the subjective essence of “what it means” to be conscious remains an issue that is very difficult to address scientifically. To really understand what is meant by the cognitive neurosciences, one must recall that until the late 1960s, the various fields of brain research were still tightly compartmentalized. Brain scientists specialized in fields such as neuroanatomy, neurohistology, neuroembryology, or neurochemistry. Nobody was yet working with the full range of investigative methods available, but eventually, the very complexity of the subject at hand-made that a necessity. The first problem that arises when examining consciousness is that a conscious experience is truly accessible only to the person who is experiencing it. Despite the vast knowledge we have gained in the field of mathematics and computer science, none of the data processing systems we have created needs subjective experiences in order to function. None feel pain, pleasure, anger, or love. These emotions are vanishing into algorithms that are or will have an effect on how we see the world but also how we live in it.   If not address now all moral and political values will disappear, turning consciousness into a kind of mental pollution. After all, computers have no minds. Take images on Instagram they can affect mental health and body image.  You might say so what that has always been the case. And you would be right up to now but because of Covid-19 government has given themselves wide-ranging powers to collect and analyze data, without adequate safeguards. If we are not careful they will have no notion of self, existing only in the present unaware of the past or future, and therefore will be unable to consciously plan for future eventualities. Unconscious algorithms in our brains rather than conscious images in a mind. If you are using a smartphone, it indirectly means that you are enjoying the AI knowingly or unknowingly. It cannot be modified unknowingly or can’t get disfigured or breakdown in a hostile environment. We should not be regulating technology but Artificial Intelligence. It is so complicated in behavior we need to be regulated it at the data level. In lots of regulated domains, there is this notion of post-market surveillance, which is where the developer bears the responsibility of how the technology developed by them is going to be used. As William Shakespeare wrote in – As you Like it.   ” All the world is a stage, and all the men and women merely players, they have their exits and entrances. ”   Sadly with AI, Machine Learning Algorithms no one knows or for that matter will ever know when they enter or exit. Probably like AI learning is actually an ongoing process that takes place throughout all of life. It’s the process of moving information from out there — to here. Unfortunately with the brain, has its own set of rules by which it learns best, unlike AI, the information doesn’t always stick. Together, we have a lot to learn. Humanity is in contact with humanity.   All human comments appreciated. All like clicks and abuse chucked in the cloud bin.

THE BEADY EYE ASK’S; JUST WHAT IS IT THAT A QUANTUM COMPUTER CAN OR WILL DO FOR HUMANITY.

( Fifteen-minute read )

There’s a lot of hype floating around one specific technology that has the potential to change everything:

Google’s recent mythical achievement does not signal the arrival of quantum computing.

Quantum Computing is still far enough away that attempting to predict when it will occur and what useful tasks it will eventually be used for is a recipe for embarrassment because history teaches us that unforeseen applications will blossom as access to new tools becomes available.

In this very detached and disintegrating world, intelligence systems are learning from the environment they are exposed to and make decisions on biases they are developing.

Once you get the wrong side of an algorithm your life immediately becomes more difficult. Your perceived failures are fed into the algorithm, and your situation degrades even further.

This is why it’s imperative that we begin to take the problem of AI BIAS seriously and take steps to mitigate their effects by making our systems more transparent, explainable, and auditable.

We must shift from automation to augmentation.

They are counting on it to change the world by solving problems that are intractable for today’s classical computers.

At the moment its all in the cloud so any assessment or update of what we know about Quantum Computers is pie in the sky.

However, there are a few thoughts.

They conjure up everything from futuristic cities to talking fridges. Undoubtedly the reality is much less sci-fi.

They are supposed to offer an opportunity to manipulate information in a fundamentally different way. To tackle ever-larger questions that can help us gain a profoundly deeper understanding of the world around us.

While traditional computers operate with bits, quantum computers operate with qubits that allow superposition. Qubits enable this because instead of being constrained to one of two possible values (1 or 0), a qubit can exist as a mixture of both.

A unique quantum physics behaviour that binds the destiny of a quantity of different particles so that what happens to one will affect the others.

“Entanglement.”

This means that a Quantum Computer can manipulate all its qubits simultaneously—in other words, instead of doing a set of calculations one after another, a quantum computer could do them all at the same time.

Okay, putting the theory aside, let’s focus on the real-world applications these quantum computers will have on the world.

Optimization slicing through a mountain of variables without breaking a sweat.

Enabling better Weather and climate modelling. Better Personalized medicine. Better Space data analyzation. Better raw computing power for machine-learning software to teach artificial intelligence more like humans. Encryption will become useless. Real-time language translation will be possible.

Open-air gesture control, with the keyboard and mouse—slowly replaced by the gesture interface.

Amazon Google, virtual assistants will understand the context behind the questions you ask; they will recognize the indirect signals given off by your tone of voice; they will even engage in long-form conversations with you.

Devices you wear or even insert inside your body to help you interact digitally with the world around you. These devices will play a supporting role in how we engage with the digital space; we’ll use them for specific purposes in specific contexts with brain implants.

Integrating all of the technologies mentioned above represents the start of an entirely new mass-market medium virtual reality and augmented reality.

The goal of AR ( augmented reality) is to act as a digital filter on top of your perception of the real world.

Everyone’s idea of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality is fixated towards science fiction however AR will eventually do away with most of the traditional computer interfaces consumers have grown up with thus far. AR, when it comes in Quantum form, it will too control machines:

Thought itself:

Amputees are now already testing robotic limbs controlled directly by the mind, instead of through sensors attached to the wearer’s stump.

An international team of scientists were able to mimic telepathy by having one person from India think the word “hello,” and through BCI, that word was converted from brain waves to binary code, then emailed to France, where that binary code was converted back into brainwaves, to be perceived by the receiving person. Brain-to-brain communication, people

Useful quantum computers still not insight.

Needless to say, the future is not too far away.

( Probably one of the most confusing twenty-five -minute to thirty-minute read I have ever written)

The computing power that we have available to us at our fingertips is astonishing but even with the most powerful supercomputers on the planet, some problems are still way beyond our reach and there are still some problems out there that would take longer than the universe has existed to solve.

In the past, we believed all computers fundamentally did the same thing—just maybe one a bit faster than another but when it comes to Quantum Computers do any of us know what we are talking about.

There are loads of attempts to explain Quantum computing in layman terms but the truth is that physicists are themselves in general agreement that no one really understands quantum mechanics which is the basis for a Quantum Computer.

Why?

Because Quantum mechanics can be used to describe many physical systems.

However, there is a common set of core principles that all of these physical systems obey.

So as quantum computers promise to truly transform our world here is another attempt to get quantum computing into an understandable language.

Just what is a Quantum Computer?

It’s like having a big airport with lots of baggage terminals, and you are looking for a lost suitcase on one of them. You employ the help of some friends to search each of the terminal one by one before you find the suitcase. A Quantum computer will search all the terminals at the same time, and only the terminal on which it is found exists after you look at it.

Weird, Yes, but this is where it gets really complicated.

The goal in quantum computing is to choreograph things so that some paths leading to a wrong answer have positive amplitudes and others have negative amplitudes, so, on the whole, they cancel out and the wrong answer is not observed.

Any the wiser? No!

Here are the dudes that contributed to its discovery, not the suitcase but the quantum Mathematics.

They all puzzles about matter and light. Coming to the conclusion that was solved by postulating that atoms and particles behave differently from macroscopic objects. Eventually, this led to the theory of quantum mechanics, which explains all of those differences, using a small number of basic principles.

One has to think of quantum mechanics as a generalization of probability theory in which probabilities can be negative.

The idea of quantum computing, however, is to use physics to do the math. For example, to devise quantum algorithms such that all the possible ways to get to the wrong answer interfere with themselves and cancel each other out, while leaving only the possibility of getting to the right answer.

Still none the wiser.

I would love to ask them why should Nature have been quantum-mechanical?

In computers, we can stuff the laws of nature into it mathematically and create the world. Other words if a computer has a sequence of thirty 0s and 1s, it has about one billion of possible values.

However, a classical computer can only be in one of these one billion states at the same time. A quantum computer can be in a quantum combination of all of those states, called superposition. This allows it to perform one billion or more copies of computation at the same time.

But how do we access these billion results?

Experiments in quantum physics are now creating artificial physical systems that obey the laws of quantum mechanics but do not exist in nature under normal conditions.

In order to fully understand the quantum world, you have to develop a new realm of mathematics.

We have little daily experience dealing with elementary particles.

The bizarre world of quantum theory — where things can seem to be in two places at the same time and are subject to the laws of probability — not only represents a more fundamental description of nature than what preceded it, it also provides a rich context for modern mathematics.

If all mathematics disappeared today, physics would be set back exactly one week,” to which a mathematician had the clever riposte: “This was the week that God created the world.”

In the quantum world, everything that can happen does happen and all are considering everything at once.

Every quantum particle, such as an electron, can be considered both as a particle and as a wave offering different perspectives on the same physical phenomenon that underlies quantum theory and, ultimately, reality.

Another words you can look at the world with a mathematical eye or with a complementary physical eye, but don’t dare to open both because the world, is not as certain as our everyday experience of has us believe.

And of course, there is no need for me to tell you that nobody has ever directly seen a single particle in several places at once.

Somehow, measurement causes reality to “snap”. Reality splits into different branches at the point of measurement. In each branch an observer sees one of the possible outcomes. One can never, ever measure both the position and the momentum of a quantum object.

Time and energy are another pair that can’t be measured simultaneously so in real life, we cannot measure states.

No I am not making this up. So don’t doubt. Just carry on reading.

A quantum computer encodes information into quantum states and computes by performing quantum operations on it. It is using trapped ions. An ion is an atom that has lost one or more of its electrons. An ion trap is a system consisting of electric and magnetic fields, which can capture ions and keep them at locations. Using an ion trap, one can arrange several ions in a line, at regular intervals the more trapped ions the better.

The computation is then performed by using light to manipulate the states of ions.

This is known as quantum parallelism. The result of this process is a quantum state.

It is not a classical state (A “state”, in general, is the collection of numbers needed to completely describe the physics you are interested in) in the sense that we could ever observe the switch in the “on and off” state, it is a quantum state that exists in an abstract space called Hilbert space. (A space with more than three dimensions.)

Still in a state of confusion. Don’t blame you. It’s wholly abstract.

How about a particle in some state that may interact with another particle in some state…

Now imagine you can make a bit (the smallest unit of data in a computer) that can be in the zero and the one state at the same time. That’s called a quantum bit or qubit.

The simplest example in nature would be just a single electron. It has a magnetic dipole called spin, which is like the needle of a compass but because it’s a quantum needle, it can be pointing up and down at the same time.

By this time your brain might be in a vat. Mine is.

They a bit or qubit. must have some form of existence because the Quantum theory is a theory about real objects in nature, what else should a physical theory be about?

The quantum state appears to be something intrinsically holistic ie emphasizing the importance of the whole rather than analysis or separation into parts.

Every state of a system is represented by a ray (or vector) in Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon that occurs when pairs or groups of particles are generated or interact in ways such that the quantum state of each particle cannot be described independently of the others, even when the particles are separated by a large distance-instead, a quantum state must be described for the system as a whole.

If we measured a quantum state, we would get just one of the results. All of the other 999,999,999 results would disappear.

So Quantum computing takes advantage of the strange ability of subatomic particles to exist in more than one state at any time.

The goal of quantum mechanics was to understand the laws of nature according to how quantum systems function.

The new goal is to manipulate and control quantum systems so that they behave in a prescribed way.

For a parallel computer, we need to have one billion different processors. In a quantum computer, all one billion computations will be running on the same hardware.

But in order to know anything about anything, some detection scheme needs to happen.

To solve this problem, one uses the second effect, quantum interference. Quantum interference is used to combine the results into something that is both meaningful and can be measured according to the laws of quantum mechanics.

Sorry, we back to Quantum Mechanics which is based on numbers called amplitudes, which can be positive or negative or even complex numbers. In quantum mechanics, the wave function is complex-valued, and the square of the absolute value yields a probability.

All of these achievements of quantum computing are based on the same effects of quantum mechanics. On a high level, these are known as quantum parallelism and quantum interference.

I have no idea what it means for a probability to be an amplitude.

Amplitudes alone are not enough to fully describe a system.

Can someone give me some kind of intuitive explanation of this concept?

Why does probability have to act like a probability?

Why should amplitudes have complex numbers?

Surely a wave is a defined frequency and phase.

Anyway, we are left with the question why do we need it?

We know that they will be faster for many computational tasks, from modelling nature to searching large amounts of data.

With a quantum computer, it is hoped to find a more efficient way to produce artificial fertilizer, having a direct impact on food production around the world, and it is hoped to help with combating global warming by learning how to efficiently extract carbon dioxide from the environment.

They will be used to conduct virtual experiments. For example, quantum chemistry re molecular simulation.

As far as it is possible to know they could be the final step in intertwining us with AI.

(The current record distance for measuring entangled particles is 1,200 kilometres or about 745.6 miles. Entanglement means that the whole quantum system is greater than the sum of its parts.) Entanglement is a fascinating property of quantum mechanics that’s completely counter-intuitive.

I think there are many more applications and, perhaps, the most important ones are still waiting to be discovered.

But there is a line that must not be crossed and that is there use intentionally or accidentally to kill us, i.e. a Quantum magical drone armed with AI and an electro-magnetic pulse would have the potency to annihilate us all.

Now that your brain is fried I leave you with this thought.

Our own system is barley understood to this day.

This thing on our shoulders is constantly working out problems even as we work on making breakfast. You are creating a program that thinks and is separate from you, within you.  You are a Quantum Computer.

We know that our brains receive their signals in symbolic form. The method of transmission and the network of transmission are a mix of electrochemical reactions that are harmonic to our network.

Quantum computing will potentially mark one of the tech world’s biggest revolutions, harnessing the quirks of quantum mechanics to speed up machine computation exponentially but as computers, they have a long ways to go to catch up with human thought and common sense. Considerably more work is needed before we can reach the long-dreamt-of moment when machine intelligence matches the human variety.

This is the huge problem on the horizon, endowing AI programs with common sense.

Even little kids has it, but no deep learning program does. It will take more than a hybrid computer to show that humankind of understanding.

Quantum or not it will still have a capacity for things the human mind can do easily, like abstraction or inference that make it possible for us to “understand” from very little information, or instantly apply insight to another set of circumstances.

A “quantum leap”quantum-ibm-1

The day may come when intelligible sentences combining quantum mathematics with brain function/consciousness/mental functions can be crafted, till that day our free will still come from quantum indeterminacy, not complex hybrid quantum algorithm yet to be devised.

The expectation is that one day when the computer technology industry achieves so-called “quantum superiority” and deliver real commercial benefits we will be best to let the idiot be an idiot.

Finally, it has just been reported by the financial times that Google’s quantum computer was able to solve a calculation – proving the randomness of numbers produced by a random number generator- in 3 minutes and 20 seconds that would take the worlds fastest traditional supercomputer around 10,000 years.

Sleep tight.

AS ALBERT EINSTEIN SAID

“As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.”
