Capitalism V Democracy., Free-market values, Globalisation, Technology, THE UNITED NATIONS, Visions of the future.

I have written on this subject before but of course you are all to preoccupied to comment.

With the major powers refusing to give up their prerogatives and hogging most of the world’s resources, a new organisation of the global community must be invented soon.

The main challenge would be to define and defend mankind’s common resources.

The spread of conventional and nuclear weapons, and terrorism and genocide through such rudimentary means as the machete, are violence that goes beyond state borders.

We need to examine the reasons for this violence. Hunger, indecent development gaps, inequality in the face of natural disasters (particularly climatic ones), the major powers’ encouragement of arms sales and other trafficking, ideologies that breed racism and discrimination (neo-Nazi factions in European and Russian countries, “Ivoirité” in the Ivory Coast, discriminatory Zionism against Arabs in Israel, with implications for the failure of the peace process, radical Islam).

Human beings will always be confronted by their own violence.

Globalisation is leaving many more poor by the wayside, provoking new forms of violence and widespread terrorism. The UN has done nothing about the protection and equitable sharing of such vital resources as water, energy, knowledge and medication.

It’s a worthless gossip shop given that international law, which remains the framework for any reform, leaves sovereign states totally free in their commitments.

The complexity of a global society is totally ignored.

If we want to imagine another worldwide institutional system, we must examine the world we live in and ask ourselves what our goals should be.

Peacekeeping has become a belated, often useless, stopgap.

The UN manages inter-state relations, albeit feebly. The intense relations established directly between populations outside state control are developing into a power struggle to the detriment of the human rights they pretend to observe – ISIS. The peace dividend promised at the end of the cold war was an illusion.

Arms sales are soaring  because the major powers chose to militarise their economies. While the UN is still dominated by the victors of the second world war. It has not lived up to its mandate and will not be now or in the future be able to do so.

Its composition bears no relation to the declared intention of equality between members. The status of the permanent members and their veto remains intact as unjustified positions of power. This permanence of power remains unchallenged even though it is ephemeral by nature and the legitimacy of the five second world war victors has been eroded years ago.

President George Bush’s unilateral decision to invade Iraq removed a dictatorship only to plunge that country into chaos and violence, further confirming the helplessness of the UN.

Not mention current wars between states, civil violence, poverty, infectious diseases, environmental degradation, terrorism, organised crime, nuclear, radiological, chemical and biological weapons.

There is no hope of the UN reforming itself any amendment must receive two-thirds of the vote in the General Assembly. To be enforced, it must then be ratified by two-thirds of the member states, including the five permanent members, and we all know what they will do.

Any proposal to democratise the council is a sham.

The history of democracy has been a constant struggle against the usurpation of power by the richest and strongest.

Where does this leave us?

The universal spread of extreme free-market values is calling for a universal political community, not to replace national communities but to complement them and cater for the complexity of a society that combines inter-state and inter-individual relations.

Technology is driving the world apart not together. Them and US.

The geopolitical shifts in Asia and in Asia’s relations with the rest of the world could lead to a redistribution of power and patterns of participation, with or without formal, structural reform.

The UN is already unable to adapt to global dynamics. Peacekeeping missions have developed exponentially, often leading to fiascos.

Is there is no one in power that can see that we need to look impartially at international trends that are challenge the world?

The need for democracy (by the elimination of all prerogatives that benefit only a few states), for law ( A world Court of Human Rights. The establishment of an international court of human rights, which would enforce the rights laid down in international treaties and hear individual appeals in special circumstances.) and justice (by the mandatory nature of international law).

These cannot be ignored for much longer. The world needs a new Organisation, not called Google.

Of course any New Organisation will need financing.

This can only be achieved by Independent funding. Any other form of funding is useless. Globalization and technology stop at no borders and capitalism continues to privatize the planet our collective destiny.

( See previous posts: A 0.05% aid commission on all High Frequency trading, on all Foreign Exchange transaction over $20,000, on all Sovereign Wealth Funds Acquisition. This will create a perpetual fund of billions)

I for one am fed up of seeing people dying while our world leaders have another conference.

Our collective Destiny.

fabric of human civilization., Human society, Technology

There is no doubting that the influence of technology will go beyond new equipment and faster communications and that Science and technology are in danger of out running our morality.

The evolution of technology has morphed the relationship between consumer and creator forever. But life exists in individual moments and it is up to us to make sure those moments are vital to technology.  Each of us has meaning, and it is us that bring these moments to life not the other way around.

This for me defines the dangers of Technology. There is a danger that we will end up starved for wisdom and individual wonder distorting the values of civilization.

Sharing may well be the mechanism that propels culture forward, but individualism driven by knowledge is what counts. Therefore we should be wary of falling into the trap of futurism. There may be a temptation to follow technological determinism, that is the idea that technology provides a logical sequence of development that pervades society regardless of its effects.

So it is necessary to study the relationship of science, technology, innovation and government. We need to stay attuned to the power dynamics at play.

Ultimately as we continue to develop and our technological capabilities even the stars will be open to our explorations.

Will humanity be prepared for the greatest discoveries of the history of our civilization?  No

Will we find other intelligent civilizations far older and incredibly superior than our technological capabilities and collective wisdom?  Yes

Our collective destiny could end with speculation on the values, ethics and consciousness of these civilizations and lessons they may hold for the future of humanity.

Recently I have concentrating on the effects of what Technology could do to Society and how we will behave or change as its influence grows.

We are already living in a world few could have imagined 50 years ago. In a new economy—powered by technology, fueled by information, without a sustainable Life-Plan.

As technology continues to spread, questions emerge:

What are we losing as a society? What is the effect on social relations? Work, after all, is more than just a job or paycheck. It is where we meet friends, share ideas, and build a common sense of purpose and a social network.

What happens if we all become Google Slaves. (see previous post) Is it creating an Hip-pro activity world designed by us that will not work. With voice mail, e-mail, and computer networks, how do we preserve the human network and the social interaction that work has helped to facilitate? What takes its place?

As I have said there may well be a strong link between technology adoption by society and its culture. But technology is never purely beneficial. It has negative and positive effects, There is a need to distinguish between desirable sustainable development and economic growth.

While it is not possible to foretell the future, it is useful to examine present trends and determine their possible consequences.

The use of computers and the Internet in workplaces is become more pervasive as work and skills are being redefined and reorganized.

The demands of the future will require increased efforts to include these workers who have been left behind and have not shared in our prosperity.

It will also require successfully integrating millions of immigrants into the workplace.

If we’re not careful, our technological evolution will take us toward not a singularity but a sofalarity.

The problem with technological evolution is that it is under our control and, unfortunately, we don’t always make the best decisions.

Does Technology want what life wants: Increasing efficiency; Increasing opportunity; Increasing emergence; Increasing complexity; Increasing diversity; Increasing specialization; Increasing ubiquity; Increasing freedom; Increasing mutualism; Increasing beauty; Increasing sentience; Increasing structure; Increasing evolvability. I think not.

Technological evolution has a different motive force. It is self-evolution, and it is therefore driven by what we want as opposed to what is adaptive. In a market economy, it is even more complex: for most of us, our technological identities are determined by what companies decide to sell based on what they believe we, as consumers, will pay for.

When it comes to technologies, we mainly want to make things easy. We are at a time of great creativity, of great potential for change for better or worse.

Technology is not the only cause of these changes, but scientists have made clear that it is a driving factor.

It is already dispensing death by algorithms.

Assuming that we really are evolving as we wear or inhabit more technological prosthetics—like ever-smarter phones, helpful glasses, and brainy cars—here’s the big question:

Will that type of evolution take us in desirable directions, as we usually assume biological evolution does?

The technology industry, which does so much to define us, has a duty to cater to our more complete selves rather than just our narrow interests. It has both the opportunity and the means to reach for something higher. And, as consumers, we should remember that our collective demands drive our destiny as a species, and define the post human condition.  Both Google and Apple would do well to keep this in mind.

All of these factors have contributed to rising inequality. The development of a hierarchy of knowledge, a prejudiced vision towards a desired future rather than recognition of more plausible realities.

We all want a future defined not by an evolution toward super intelligence but by the absence of discomforts.

In general, humans have a tendency to always choose the easiest option without
stopping to think that maybe, to think another perspective would open other
possibilities.

Big Data, Internet, Smart Phone., Society, Technology

Right, this is the last post on the subject of what is shaping our technology driven Society.

We are living in a world that relies on data communications.

It is hard to think of any tool, any instrument, any object in history with which so many developed so close a relationship so quickly as we have with our phones.

The Mobil Phone/Cell phone/I phone what ever you wish to call it has evolved into the Smart Phone. > voice and text services, cameras, alarm clock, and radio, access to the internet> all of which will be on your wrist shortly > Apple Smart Watch.

1 in 4 people check it every 30 minutes, 1 in 5 every 10 minutes.

There are almost as many mobile subscriptions (6.8 billion) as there are people in the world (7.1 billion)

I start this post by saying there is no argument when it comes to positive benefits to Society, that the mobile phone has contributed more to the individual than the Internet or Big Data has done to date.

On the other hand I believe it has also contributed to : The mess we have on our hands, to spreading the inequalities of the world, to fueling terrorist Organisations, to spreading non-thrusts, to making today, now it’s tomorrow, and to leading us to expect more from Technology and Less from Each Other.

The Mobil Phone has become an indispensable feature of technology that is rapidly changing the face of communication not only in the most remote areas of the world but also the family structures of the world.

Returning to an Individual and an overall view:

Mobile phones are helping under served populations access the critical skills and empowering information they need to make informed decisions for themselves and their families, and move toward economic self-sufficiency.

They have done more than all the Aid given to Africa and beyond. In fact they are being used to facilitate and promote economic development and growth.

They reduce search costs and increase information availability, which makes markets function more efficiently.

In terms of the diffusion of ideas and knowledge, mobile phones make available information about market prices and employment.

The people who are growing your food, making your clothes, and assembling your electronic devices are often poor, low-wage workers around the world who don’t have Internet access. The way we are able to connect with them is through mobile,” it provides workers with a voice — individually and collectively — by having an anonymous tool to provide feedback.

But we’re also learning that organizations — large, for-profit corporations and small, nonprofit social enterprises alike — are using mobile technology to operate better and smarter. Organizations are using mobile phones to gather real-time data that help them make informed business decisions and that yield social impacts.

But what effect are they having on Society as a whole.

Smart phones have brought a whole new meaning to the term multitasking.

Smart phones are changing the way that people interact with each other, allowing the users to be in a conversation without showing their personal expressions. As a result, we are beginning to lose the face-to-face contact that was such an important part of our lives in the past. The need to belong.

They provide farmers with information on market prices and weather reports, and they link micro and small entrepreneurs to markets and potential buyers. And, they provide mothers with important information to keep themselves and their children healthy.

Just look at

Taro Works, a mobile enabled tool with a cloud-based back-end. In non-tech lingo, this means field-based workers can gather and submit data through a mobile phone, providing real-time intelligence to their home offices. One organization using Taro Works is Honey Care Africa, a social enterprise that promotes sustainable beekeeping and economic development by providing micro finance, training, and other services to bee farmers.

Vision Spring is another social enterprise that uses Taro Works for better business and social impact. Vision Spring fights poverty by selling affordable eyeglasses to the poor, enabling them to work and learn. Why reading glasses? Studies of the economic impact of reading glasses in India showed a 35% increase in individual productivity and 20 percent increase in individual monthly income.

We knew there is great potential for mobile phones. But how to approach the issue of development using mobile technologies, remains contentious. In conjunction with Big Data, the Internet, their impact on economic development and growth are numerous.

There is no doubting their ability of time-saving capabilities/conveyance or getting assistance in an emergency. Therefore, smart phone is an important device which people cannot leave home without it.  A social necessity that we teens and adults, cannot be without, an addiction.

It would make uninteresting reading to list all the possibility of Mobil usages.

There are a few to high light how they are changing our world and could be used to change it further.

Before the appearance of the smart phone; it was impossible to shop online during lunch time without a PC or laptop. However, with the support of smart phones, shopping online in these days is as easy as making a phone call.

Services to transfer money can also help counter human trafficking, crime.

Services/Apps have changed the way healthcare is delivered globally, with the potential to provide individuals with an unprecedented amount of access to health resources.

Mobile phones eliminates the need for clients to spend time traveling to the physical banks, enabling greater access to capital, which facilitates investment and productivity.

Services to conduct Surveys, to Petition government. To impose Western ideals and culture upon other nations, resulting in a “practical elitism, but smart phones also emit radiation which some believe may be harmful to human health.

The growth of the cell phone industry itself, adding more jobs and creating more demand for products and services is another way in which mobile phones have contributed to economic growth.

Recent studies show that radiation from mobile phones are interfering with navigation system of bees and causing them to lose their way back to their hive.  As a result of this their colonies are collapsing.

Cell phones have led to social evils such as ‘sexting’, harassment and bullying of teens, in addition to creating less unity with families and friends.

Social interaction does not lead to greater concern for others, and in fact may have the opposite effect of reducing concern for others, leading to decreased pro social behavior. Eroding people’s ability to write sentences that communicate real meaning and inhibit the art of dialogue resulting in a negative impact on people’s interpersonal skills. The next generation (or so) is not going to ever be able to connect with another person, confront someone, or talk to someone face to face.

Trans formative tool for Science, Research, Surveys.

And how much about our lives and work and relationships is left to be completely transformed as a result? is anyone’s guess.

Conclusion:

For me all three ( Internet, Big Data, Smart Phones) are all connected to each other.

You will see from previous posts that I advocate that the power of Mobil phones as a lobbing force is untapped.  It could be used to force the United nations to pass a people’s resolution to place a 0.05% aid commission on all electronic trading on the world stock exchanges. ( See previous posts.)

We hear more and more communication, but less and less to communicate.

Half human, half machine almost god, this new link in the evolution will continue its exploration beyond the enclosure of time and space. Fortunately there are, not that our smartphones are intelligent.

R. Laing  already wrote in 1967: “The machines have become more and more able to communicate with each other as humans.

If we want a world that is more equal, access to information should be universal – it should not be limited to the privileged groups in a society, but available to all of us including the impoverished.

So what will be their future applications.  Feel free to add to my list.

Brain training.

iPod Finger, Smart Phone Finger, insurance will become big business.

Increase literacy.

Suddenly my smartphone vibrates mystique.

“The digital revolution is over, the digital won!  Because the more you consume, the more it abounds. The more stores, the more it circulates. The more you distribute, the more it flows.

Smartphones, Technology, The Internet of Things

This is what I call – A run up the flag pole post – see who salutes.

Sorry it’s also another rather long-winded post.

We can’t go anywhere, do anything without our Gadgets.

In my last post I said that Inequality was at the heart of most of our troubles in the world.

But is the Internet (which is without the qualities of Love and Tolerance) also contributing by having an effect on Society/Community and spreading discontent by highlighting these Inequalities? I would say (All technologies have their downsides) Yes.

To Say that humankind is now almost entirely connected, albeit with great levels of inequality in bandwidth, efficiency, and price, is not quite yet a reality.

There are about fifteen billion devices presently connected and there will be around forty billion devices connected by 2020.

There are about 16 million subscribers of wireless devices in the world.

In 2013 it was close to 7 billion (in a planet of 7.7 billion human beings). In 2014, nearly 75% (2.1 billion) of all internet users in the world (2.8 billion) live in the top 20 countries, sending around 114 billion e mails each day of which 68.8% are spam.

Ninety eight percent of all information existing in the planet is digitized and most of it is accessible on the Internet and other computer networks.

Think about what happens when we connect all of those unconnected devices.

We will all turn into Me-centered society.

Does anyone care other than those that have being effected that another Social relationships is being reconstructed on the basis of individual interests, values, and projects, and not on the values that are shared through out the World.

Today, social networking sites are the preferred platforms for all kinds of activities, both business and personal, and sociability has dramatically increased — but it is a different kind of sociability that conveys the best and the worse in humankind.

Technology is already a second skin for young people.

While highlight the gaps between the Haves and Haves Nots. The Internet is on one hand desensitizing us as individuals.

It is doing this by disintermediating government and corporate control of communication.

Horizontal communication networks are creating a new landscape of social and political change. The consequences of which are not understood and will not be for some considerable time to come.

More than 50 billion ‘things’ are projected to be connected to the Internet by 2020, which, combined with advanced big data analytics, will constitute a giant, intelligent network that will change the way we govern, trade, and interact.

Technology is a material culture and the Internet is the technology of freedom that allows us to do what we wish with this material culture.

To date we are overwhelmed by it, out of sheer ignorance of its effects. It is like a Bulgarian riddle – Here I am, there I am, and yet they cannot catch me.

At the moment we are unable to access its effects and implications, so there will always be a gap between social change and its understanding. To the full understanding of the world in which we live is becoming an impossibility due to consent distraction.

So let us address some effects before virtual life becomes more social than the physical life, but it is less a virtual reality than a real virtuality.  If you get what I mean.

Community is formed through individuals’ quests for like-minded people in a process that combines online interaction with offline interaction, cyberspace, and the local space. Our social environment, how we enjoy ourselves, how we buy, what we study, how we travel,… Everything we do has changed thanks to the Internet and a host of spin-off technologies. From the alphabet to clocks and printing, every major new technology has profoundly altered the way in which humans think.

Take for instance Facebook users: They visit the site daily, and they connect on multiple dimensions, but only on the dimensions they choose.

Unquestionably this change has also reached the business world. How will the business of the future function? Big data is undoubtedly one of the key ingredients for a successful transformation that has already begun. Networks are global and know no boundaries,  but the network society is a global network society with no rules.

Many public issues and social voices are pushed to the margins of society by market values and commercial communication, making it difficult to get the attention of those living in the “walled gardens” of consumerism.

For example:

In work (entrepreneurship), in the media (the active audience), in the Internet (the creative user), in the market (the informed and proactive consumer), in education (students as informed critical thinkers, making possible the new frontier of e-learning and m-learning pedagogy), in health (the patient-centered health management system) in e-government (the informed, participatory citizen), in social movements (cultural change from the grassroots, as in feminism or environmentalism), and in politics (the independent-minded citizen able to participate in self-generated political networks).

If the dominant cultural trend in our society is the search for autonomy, and if the Internet powers this search, then we are moving toward a society of assertive individuals and perhaps cultural freedom.

Yet, the global network society is our society, and the understanding of its logic on the basis of the interaction between culture, organization, and technology, in the formation and development of social and technological networks is key to what society is going to be in the future.  For example the Intense use of the Internet increases the risk of isolation, alienation, and withdrawal from society.

Already from this Internet-based culture of autonomy here is emerging a new kind of sociability, networked sociability, and a new kind of sociopolitical practice, networked social movements and networked democracy.

Did it lend a hand in the creation of Jihad John and ISIS.

Whether it did or not the Web constitute the technological infrastructure of the global network society, yet it continues to feed the fears and the fantasies of those who are still in charge of a society that they barely understand.

The digital gadgets on which we now depend, have already begun rewiring our brains. We are offloading thinking to technology, using our phones as our extended minds.

Smartphones users Worldwide will surpass 2 billion in 2016 i.e. ¼ of the Global population and will be 3 billion by 2018.

From a society that valued the creation of a unique storehouse of ideas in each individual, man is moving to a socially constructed mind that values speed and group approval over originality and creativity.

Some evolutionary biologists claim that the scholarly mind is a historical anomaly: that humans, like other primates, are designed to scan rapidly for danger and opportunity. If so, the net delivers this shallow, scattered mindset with a vengeance. Hyperlinks and over stimulation mean the brain must give most of its attention to short-term decisions.

The digital technology is already damaging the long-term memory consolidation that is the basis for true intelligence.

In particular clicking, skipping, skimming—and especially on working and deep memory.                           Is Google Making Us Stupid?

Something is always lost, and something gained.

Here are a few unanswered Questions.

  • How will privacy issues impact upon the uptake of the Internet of Things in democratic institutions?
  • What is the role of Government in an age of Smart Cities and algorithmic regulation?
  • How can civil society institutions ensure that the Internet of Things is harnessed for the public good?
  • How can technologies be designed to create deeper civic engagement?
  • What are the global implications on foreign policy of connecting the unconnected?
  • How can the Internet of Things impact developing countries?
  • What is the potential impact of the Internet of Things on transnational crime?
  • Cyber crime and Cyber security.
  • How will the Internet of Things affect critical national infrastructure?
  • Hyper connected Diplomacy.
  • Encryption and Integrity.

And then you have Humor.

To what extent does the Internet function as a mediator of ‘old’ or traditional humorous forms and topics (e.g. jokes), and to what extent does it facilitate‘new’ humorous forms and topics (e.g. digitally manipulated photographs) in cyber-humor.

Since visual language can move across cultures more easily than verbal language ask yourself if the Internet has become a major actor in the production and distribution of humor.

Internet use empowers people by increasing their feelings of security, personal freedom, and influence, all feelings that have a positive effect on happiness and personal well-being.

Humor appears in many kinds of Websites, spanning personal/amateur blogs that provide funny and lighthearted commentary on events to commercial or professional Websites which often link to mass media such as newspapers (e.g. http://www.theonion.com) and television (e.g.www.comedycentral.com).

How do the new forms and topics of online humor relate to fundamental characteristics of the Internet, specifically interactivity, multimedia and global reach?

The joke might indeed be dead as an oral form since visual language can move across cultures more easily than verbal language. Jokes have been transformed to a popular Internet-based written form-home video’ and ‘media slapstick’ humor.

Why are the types of ‘home video’ and ‘media slapstick’ so popular on You Tube.

Is it because they are personal pieces that seem to reflect the bottom-up nature of the Internet as a space in which everyone, and not only professional comedians, can create humorous content. This kind of humor is not culture specific – a man who slips on a banana peel will probably be regarded as funny in many parts of the globe, by members of various age and gender groups.

How does comedy undermine or reinforce our attitudes towards race, gender, religion, class and ethnicity?

Does what makes us laugh reveal our deep social norms and taboos?

In viral Internet-based commercials, humor is an integral, almost obligatory component but violence as a means of humor in advertising is on the rise.

Viral advertisements,’  Top ten things men know about women’ or ‘Twenty excuses to miss a day of work.

Not only are the vast majority of texts in English, but they also reflect the values and priorities of Western, capitalist and youth-oriented cultures.  However, the definitions of interactivity, as well as the methods for their ope rationalization, remain in dispute.

Culture jamming argue that culture, politics, and social values have been bent by saturated commercial environments, from corporate logos on sports facilities, to television content designed solely to deliver targeted audiences to producers and sponsors. The Internet is wide open to this form of brain washing.

When it comes to humor has the Web has been corporatized?   Interactivity is perceived as an important key to understanding the social implications of the Internet.

That everything is worth making fun of, nothing should be taken seriously, not even a guy getting punched in the face until he bleeds or Hitler reacting to an incident.

Last but not least we come to the Question of Porn.

The Internet is saturated with porn that is debasing us all.

Should there be a safety door into a segregated area of the internet into which all pornographic content should be placed. Viewable only by those how supply online personal details, such as age, positive Id. It would be a step in the right direction. Not Censorship but sensible Stewardship.

If you are not already Gadgetry I would be interested to hear you views.

Technology is making us conscious of the need for a new society.

In my last post I said that “Technology is making us conscious of the need for a new society.” It was a thought without an explanation.Illustration

It seems pretty obvious to most observers that our social networks have changed in the past few decades thanks to technology. The widespread use of cell phones, the increasing affordability of air travel, the rise of the Internet, and the advent of social media have changed the way we work, the way we live, and the way we make and maintain friendships, the way we view the world.

Our increasing on-line connectives is and has changed our perceptions of our social world for the better and to the determent of reality. The world of social networking sites is changing every day and is going to have more impact on the lives of generations to come. Because television and other popular forms of social media shape our perception of reality.

Nothing epitomises the anonymity of the Internet more than Anonymous.

Anonymity can be extremely dangerous, particularly to governments.

On the other hand sharing is all the rage these days.  Sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn allow people across the globe to broadcast every detail of their lives with the rest of the world through the mediums of text, audio, photo and video. Nowadays, the internet has simplified everything to the extent where you’re never more than a few minutes away from what you need.

However is the on-line world truly distinct from the off-line one?

Illegal activity such as drug distribution or human trafficking are handled through the ‘deep web’, areas of the internet not indexed by search engines. The worldwide group of self-proclaimed ‘hacktivists’ whose actions have had a number of significant impacts on corporations around the globe are another example.

General internet opinion is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways of establishing a consensus on something, with businesses or Governments ignoring public opinion doing so at their peril.

Technology hasn’t undermined our social relationships, although it has certainly affected them.

The prevalence of social media has, as a result, fundamentally changed the way we read and watch: we think about how we’ll share something, and whom we’ll share it with, as we consume it.

So what impact does Facebook have on today’s technologically advanced society?

Facebook’s effect on today’s society is not difficult to distinguish. … Facebook opens up other questions about today’s society, too. … in the age of digital communication when we can follow our state and national politicians on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. But it remains nothing more than a medium for communication, and yet, it is so much more than that. At a glance, a user can learn everything from what gender a Facebook member is, to what religion they believe in, what school they attend, and their likes and dislikes, all with the click of a mouse.

In other words, the world of constant connectivity and media, as embodied by Facebook, is the social network’s worst enemy.

The time of mentally entertaining ourselves, is disappearing. We’ve forgotten how.” Whenever we have downtime, the Internet is an enticing, quick solution that immediately fills the gap. We get bored, look at Facebook or Twitter, and become more bored.

Getting rid of Facebook wouldn’t change the fact that our attention is, more and more frequently, forgetting the path to proper, fulfilling engagement. And in that sense, Facebook isn’t the problem. It’s the symptom.

The number of things we have pulling at our attention, the less we are able to meaningfully engage, and the more discontented we become. What Facebook does to our emotional state may be in simply looking at what people actually do when they’re on Facebook. What makes it complicated is that Facebook is for lots of different things—and different people use it for different subsets of those things.

Topics such as cyber bullying, addiction to cyber porn, and overall addiction to Internet games are something we need to study more.

The Internet may increase the overall frequency of communication but it is opening a new forum of disconnection to what really matters in our lives. The internet doesn’t just offer information in comprehensive fashion, it offers it instantaneously.

It is an ongoing record of human history – regardless of how much it continues to grow, individuals will always be able to access some obscure story from the earlier nineties, for instance, ensuring that almost anything we create today will never be lost to future generations.

Sites that mix professional and public criticism together, such as Rotten Tomatoes or Meta Critic, are now regarded as highly important by the likes of film and game manufacturers, as negative reception spreads more quickly than ever and sales are impacted as a result.

Crowd sourcing is allowing projects to source investment, interest and possible custom from a huge user base.

E Bay is providing a medium for consumers to make exchanges with other consumers, allowing people to sell their unwanted goods rather than throwing them away.

YouTube, Sound Cloud or U stream, is used to distribute either pre-recorded or live material.

Trip Advisor, where everything from restaurants to hotels are looked at in meticulous detail.

Netflix and catch-up services. Tailored marketing, literature, games, films and television have outgrown the need for a costly physical medium such as a book or disc, and are accessible in an instant on the likes of e-book readers.

From car-sharing and house-hunting to dating and charitable donation sourcing, somebody somewhere seems to have come up with an online solution that makes things easier, and long may it stay that way.

What is lacking (for lack of a better word) is an Internet World Political Party.MapBoxOSM

A rallying point to bring the power of the Internet to address the Inequalities in our world.

To increases social trust and engagement—and even encourages political participation. It would impart a feelings of bonding with a general social capital increase that could be used to pressurize change for the good of us all.

We live our lives immersed in technology, surrounded by cell phones, computers, video games, digital music players and video cams.

The Internet of Things : ’The home of the future. Your own personal digital ‘nanny’ to control almost every element of your life through apps or a web browser.

People will not only make their entire home web-connect and use it for personal benefits they will also become addicted to their Digital Nanny.

The Internet of things will become central to society than the internet as we know it today, its role will probably be reduced in the future.

Nonetheless, it’s definitely exciting to see what the future brings other than –                                                     “Liking.”

Sitting in front of the TV a  leading Comedy Actress looked into the camera and said ” I wish to thank all my new-found friends for watching. I love you.”

I thought to myself how sick. Where is all of this technology going to end up.

Making predictions about technology can be a tricky business.

Take for instance the Star Wars Beam me up Scottie.  Who to-day would have thought is possible. Not many. However the other day the quantum state (the direction it was spinning) of a light particle instantly traveled 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) across an optical fiber, becoming the farthest successful quantum teleportation feat yet.

So lets look at the current state and progress of different technologies used in fields such as 3D printing, big data and analytics, open intellectual property movement, massively online open courses, security cross-cutting issues, universal memory, 3D integrated circuits, photonics, cloud computing, computational biology and bioinformatics, device and nanotechnology, sustainability, high-performance computing, the Internet of Things, life sciences, machine learning and intelligent systems, natural user interfaces, networking and inter-connectivity, quantum computing, software-defined networks, multicore, and robotics for medical care.

The drawbacks and Pluses of technologies.

Security Cross-Cutting Issues.

The growth of large data repositories and emergence of data analytics have combined with intrusions by bad actors, governments, and corporations to open a Pandora’s box of issues. How can we balance security and privacy in this environment?

Open Intellectual Property Movement.

From open source software and standards to open-access publishing, the open IP movement is upon us.

Sustainability.

Can electronic cars, LED lighting, new types of batteries and chips, and increasing use of renewables combat rising energy use and an explosion in the uptake of computing?

Massively Online Open Courses.
MOOCs have the potential to transform the higher-education landscape, siphoning students from traditional universities and altering faculty and student roles. How significant will their impact be?

Quantum Computing.
Constrained only by the laws of physics, quantum computing will potential extend Moore’s Law into the next decade. As commercial quantum computing comes within reach, new breakthroughs are occurring at an accelerating pace.

Device and Nanotechnology.
It is clear that MEMS devices, nanoparticles, and their use in applications are here to stay. Nanotechnology has already been useful in manufacturing sunscreen, tires, and medical devices that can be swallowed.

3D Integrated Circuits.
The transition from printed circuit boards to 3D-ICs is already underway in the mobile arena, and will eventually spread across the entire spectrum of IT products

.Universal Memory.
Universal memory replacements for DRAM will cause a tectonic shift in architectures and software.

Multicore.
By 2022, multicore will be everywhere, from wearable systems and smartphones to cameras, games, automobiles, cloud servers, and exa-scale supercomputers.

Photonics.
Silicon photonics will be a fundamental technology to address the bandwidth, latency, and energy challenges in the fabric of high-end systems.

Networking and Interconnectivity.
Developments at all levels of the network stack will continue to drive research and the Internet economy.

Software-defined Networks.
OpenFlow and SDN will make networks more secure, transparent, flexible, and functional.

High-performance Computing.
While some governments are focused on reaching exascale, some researchers are intent on moving HPC to the cloud.

Cloud Computing.
By 2022, cloud will be more entrenched and more computing workloads run on the cloud.

The Internet of Things.
From clothes that monitor our movements to smart homes and cities, the Internet of Things knows no bounds, except for our concerns about ensuring privacy amid such convenience.

Natural User Interfaces.
The long-held dreams of computers that can interface with us through touch, gesture, and speech are finally coming true, with more radical interfaces on the horizon.

3D Printing.
3D printing promises a revolution in fabrication, with many opportunities to produce designs that would have been prohibitively expensive.

Big Data and Analytics.
The growing availability of data and demand for its insights holds great potential to improve many data-driven decisions.

Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems.
Machine learning plays an increasingly important role in our lives, whether it’s ranking search results, recommending products, or building better models of the environment.

Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.
Unlocking information in pictures and videos has had a major impact on consumers and more significant advances are in the pipeline.

Life Sciences.
Technology has been pivotal in improving human and animal health and addressing threats to the environment.

Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.
Vast amounts of data are enabling the improvement of human health and unraveling of the mysteries of life.

Medical Robotics.
From autonomous delivery of hospital supplies to telemedicine and advanced prostheses, medical robotics has led to many life-saving innovation

Global Internet traffic has increased five fold over the past five years, and will increase threefold over the next five years. Overall, Internet traffic will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 21 percent from now to 2018.  Apple is thought to have sold some 38.2 million iPhones in the third quarter of 2014.

For me the big questions is: Will the merger of devices that augment the brain and physical capabilities generate a new species, or create an even larger digital divide among humans.

Will we have supercomputers, which draw megawatts, as powerful and efficient as the 30-watt human brain?  What changes could such processors bring?”

It predicts that more than 23 million smart wristbands alone will be sold.

Wearables are expected to include contact lenses with sensors that measure glucose levels in people with diabetes and electronic “tattoos” that monitor how well a wound is healing.  Wearable technology includes smart wristbands and pedometers to measure things such as a person’s daily steps, calories burned, and how many times they wake during the night. There’s even a wearable for maintaining good posture.

IN FIVE YEARS, I DON’T THINK THERE WILL BE A REASON TO HAVE A TABLET ANYMORE… Based on each patient’s genome, a simple pill will no longer be a product but a service that involves remote monitoring, essential if you’re the first to take that pill. What will this mean for medical research when it comes to designing mass clinical trials. Who is going to be able afford Health Care when it is in the hands Profit.

Manufacturing will become more decentralized, with robots communicating with one another remotely, or whether robots will be used in the home to produce small custom parts. a mix of locally and centrally produced energy sources could radically change the economics of the industry.

Vehicle technology will have to have mind-controlled games to keep us occupied while we travel. Will these be created by cellphones or a patchwork of independently deployed networks like the AA, making travel its self a selling exercise.

There is one thing that is going to happen for certain. Those outside the technologies are going to become poorer, more extreme, and live longer.

If we are to manage all this Change we the one with SmartPhones and I Pads must demand that any life changing Technology should be available and accessible to all, especially Education if we are to avoid being ruled by the ignorant. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all

All the festivities of Christmas and the New year are over.

It’s the start of another year and I am sure like me there are many of you afraid to ask ” Am I going to make it to the End of the Year.

The answer I hope is Yes.

We all know that new racial tensions are rising and finding expression in violence.

However the Deserts of Technology are just being created.

Some of us will lose our jobs, other will find new jobs but you can rest assured in this part of the world that technology will become more and more pervasive and that you are slap bang in the middle of incredible change, with unprecedented breaches in personal data leading this charge.

Now all of this has happened before and the nature of man has not changed nor will it change.

Why?

Because no matter what technology we invent Greed has an eye on it.

Because as before we are not ready for the changes to come.

Because we are unwilling to except that the smart machine era will be the most disruptive in the history of IT and most of us have no concept of the disruption it will be causing in Industry after Industry.

The cost of production is becoming less than the cost of human labor.

So my advice is to wake up if you have not already done so.

The advent of dump down intelligence ( The game Angry Birds was downloaded over a million times in the first 24 hours it was available on Android devices. Seven months later the game had been downloaded more than 200 million times.) is on us and soon it will be everywhere.  Your prosperity or happiness you can rest assured will be a long way down the list of things to be achieved in the Capitalistic World of 2015.

The concept of peace is easy to grasp; that of international security is more complex even if the revolution in communications has united the world in awareness, in aspiration and in greater solidarity against injustice.  We are all being turned into non sustainable commodities.

If you don’t believe me answer a few of the following:

What will the Chinese Economy do when it is replaced by 3 -D Printing?

( The growth of the 3-D printing market is to increase at a compound rate of 23 percent—to $8.4 billion—by 2020, with expansion into areas such as architecture, medical products and jewelry design. Physical and online retailers are expected to market 3-D printing technology, undoubtedly one of the most exciting topics of discussion for technology enthusiasts in the coming year, and one that will eventually result in more innovative and productive outcomes.)

The office robotics market is growing seven times faster than the market for manufacturing robots.  Not long now before the remote worker population will include some 43 percent of all U.S.

What will the world of Finance do when it is radical changed and replaced by Crowdfunding? (The recently announced acquisition of the venerable New York Stock Exchange by the upstart Intercontinental Exchange. Shows that the residual value of the NYSE would appear to be largely in its brand.)

What will our Health Organisation do when we are all wearing attachable Health Monitoring sensors that will monitor our health feeding its data back to AI -based physicians who will understand your genomics sequence data. (We wont need doctors for day-to-day medical advice nor surgeons as all basic operations will be performed by Robotic Surgeons perhaps owned by GOOGLE or some other I Cloud based operator.)

What will our Energy companies do when we reach Grid parity i.e. When it becomes cheaper to produce your own energy than it is to buy from the grid.

What will our communication companies do when all communications will be done thorough free with WiFi networks. (Long distant calls are all ready dead with Skype.)

What will our Political leaders do when power rests with Social Media, Sovereign Wealth Funds and Big Data.

At present, mobile devices outnumber the total population of the planet, which indicates that in the near future every device having an IP address will have the capability to connect with others and be controlled from other devices through internet enabling firms to quickly and cost effectively realize more value from structured and unstructured information.

The Internet of Things (IoT) will generate revenue exceeding $300 billion worldwide by 2020, with some 26 billion devices connected to the IoT.

As modern devices like mobiles, cameras, wearable gadgets, sensors, and cloud based services, social networking etc use and produce data that can be translated into information for its users, this also calls for provisioning for storage of petabytes and terabytes of data in a secured and a usable format to be able to turn it into meaningful insights. (2014 has been a wake up call for those outside the world of cyber security.)

As technology gains its presence in almost every aspect of human life, it will be crucial for nearly every application to include analytic’s to filter out the colossal amounts of information, known as big data, generated by daily activities and engagement with technology, web and social media, reaping its benefits.

Just look at Twitter today the company boasts more than 200 million active users and half a billion tweets a day. It is destabilized everything from the news and information ecosystem to unpopular national governments.

2015 it will present some of the greatest challenges and threats to advancing technology. In a age where Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, internet fads (or “memes”) can infect the whole world in a matter of days our World Organisations are becoming obsolete.

The numbers are staggering: Among the billions of hours of videos that are now available over the Web, an estimated 100 million users around the world watch at least one online video every day.

Where does all of this leave us?

If you asked me the truth is, we don’t know, don’t have any idea. we don’t know when we started doing many of the things we’ve done. we don’t know what we are doing right now or how or present actions will affect the future. what we do know is that there is only one planet to do it on and on it one species of being capable of making a considered difference.

We have arrived at this position in a stunningly short time, and we are really at the beginning of it all.

With the merging of the real and virtual worlds the robotics industry will increase at a rate of more than 20 percent in next five years with advanced algorithms that will allow systems to understand their environment, learn for themselves, and act autonomously,

But Technology has a blind spot.

Our identities as humans are each and every day being eroded. Progress is also bringing new risks for stability: ecological damage, disruption of family and community life, with greater intrusion into the lives and rights of individuals.

With the merging of the real and virtual worlds the robotics industry will increase at a rate of more than 20 percent in next five years with advanced algorithms that will allow systems to understand their environment, learn for themselves, and act autonomously.

The accepted notions on how to eradicate poverty is being Challenged by the rapid transformation of Financial trading from physical to electronic,

If we are not to drive the world into unbridled Inequality we need to for once in its history Cap Greed ( see previous Posts) and stop Privatization for the sake of profit.

Knowing how to Google something is not enough.

Like me I am sure you look at our world and wonder how has it got its self in such a mess.

If anything, the amount of knowledge one needs to know to make sense of today’s issues is staggering.

Putting inequality and greed aside, the lack togetherness has to be one of the main problems. We with our interconnected world have little if any appreciation or understanding of other cultures in the world.

So has technology plunged the world into its present day state?

”You can look anything up on you iPad, so you don’t have to know anything (“factual mastery is become less and less important.”)

Real knowledge and understanding is going out the door. In order to have a conversation, or to contemplate or invent something, you must have the information in your head, so that you can combine it with other information that is also in your head. There’s no time to “look it up. You can only work with what’s in your head. That’s why computers don’t just have hard disks, they also have “working memory.

Or is the Internet making us more skilled at asking questions, or is it more important that it is parroting answers to someone else’s questions.

I can’t help wondering what will happen if we rely mainly on electronic devices to provide information…..and then there’s a blackout.

Then who has the floor?

The person who actually KNOWS something and can articulate it. The guy looking it upon the iphone plays second fiddle.  Who do you think would win? The guy with the knowledge, and therefore, quick retorts in his head, or the one fumbling with the Ipad?

Unfortunately, this is the road we are going down. I don’t see how present days technologist are creating knowledge to improve the world. This can only be true when a microchip can be implanted in my head so that my brain can draw on all the knowledge it needs to reason and think creatively. We can’t fix a human problem with a pure technological solution. I am also afraid to tell you that technology is no replacement for caring.

Education is a dance. A theatrical moving-about. It requires more than a dump of information and a hologram or computer or Smart Phone to be Intelligent.

You might think I am talking unadulterated crap but the best educated of most of us learned was what we did it with a pencil, some paper, an adult teacher and some chalk in a classroom. Miraculously such people got a man on the moon. The very idea of computers was invented by such people (Bill Gates and the late Stephen Jobs were in their middle 50s).

Humans have always worked in collaboration for important achievements. Unfortunately these days factual mastery is becoming less and less important.

We are into a hodgepodge of moment-driven quantitative analyses.

We now have Teenagers who have a great knowledge of math and science but no capability to understand what the value of it is beyond a paycheck they might earn.

Why learn a foreign language when there is Google Translate?  We persist in using skin color as a way of defining individuals.

The capability of the human mind to keep knowledge does not increase at the same rate as the expansion of knowledge. Learning is never done and there is no arbitrary point where we are ready for the real world.

At least becoming proficient, in another language is key to global integration, not the reverse.

In this computer-driven age more and more exams in many subjects are multiple choice guessing contests graded by computer – and even math exams require one to enter the problem’s solution in an exact and strictly timed format, making it possible to get all the right answers and still fail for lack of ability to perform data entry with sufficient dexterity and speed.

You hear these day with the current terrorism in the world that young people are being radicalized. Why?

  1. Because the wheels of commerce are supercharged by the electricity of a million of Hippocratic hand shakes. USA-Iran,Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Palestinian.
  2. Because the alternative of the ignorant is to rely on some talking head.
  3. Because New technologies are profoundly altering the way knowledge is conveyed.
  4. Because the pursuit of knowledge and skills is too expensive.
  5. Because we don’t educate our young to gain a full range of basic intellectual skills. Value, Curiosity, Tolerance, Respect, Creativity.
  6. Because ethical thinking which is crucial for individuals and societies to better address and deal with public policy issues is a forgotten as a moral philosophy, leaving a void to radicalization, away from the materialistic world.
  7. Because we have forgotten that Education will be more about how to process and use information and less about imparting it.  It has degenerated over the last two generations from a reflective science that gave value to life through the deep thinking of individuals and the careful review of their peers into I am all right Jack syndrome.
  8. Because we rely almost entirely on passive learning.  To follow in over-trodden paths of conventionalism. If the goal is to turn students into robot-like performers they’ll certainly accomplish it, but how much can you expect the many problems in the real world to be solved by robots?
  9. Because a big part of stopping radicalization and having students thrive is to give them people to emulate, and people who support their dreams. At the rate and direction we are headed I wonder if students will be able to answer what is 13 squared without a calculator or recall who fought in WWI or II.
  10. Because we should pay for students to spend a semester or more abroad.  An educational experience worth every penny of its extra cost. To Master  A Language. would be far more beneficial than; mastering, or rethinking how to more effectively prepare.
  11. Because we need to do away the basic notion that you have to learn something in order to be able to move toward higher level skills of thinking and analysis. So it can go down more easily with students who were raised on the internet.
  12. Because the current system of grouping pupils by age across all subjects by force is archaic.
  13. Because the idea that data and collaboration are “coming” is absurd. We need an education system the is flexible enough to be custom tailored to each student without the necessity to change any part of the system itself. The capability of the human mind to keep knowledge does not increase at the same rate as the expansion of knowledge.”It’s a common error to believe language exists in a vacuum, that by simply sharing a common lexicon the world’s social, economic and political barriers will fall like leaves in an autumn wind.
  14. Because Specialization is for insects.
  15. Because teaching Mandarin to the next generation wouldn’t be a bad idea, as a one-way communication of English will otherwise lead to global misunderstanding.
  16. Because naked greed, willful ignorance, and incompetence – are as common as daylight. Let’s also deliver thoughtfulness.
  17. Because  A good example is the concept of our living in a heliocentric system rather than a earth-centric system.
  18. Because it was impossible to think seriously about the future many things in life holds that things take longer to happen than you think they will, and then happen faster than you thought they could.
  19. Because there is a huge difference between sheer memorization of a tremendous amount of data and actually knowing how to use that data.

Do people leave college with an accurate robust knowledge of probability?

No. It is only attained.

Most things are as untrue as they are true.

“A human being should be able to change a nappy, plan an invasion, butcher a pig, steer a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.

The purpose of public education is to teach students to think, give students real skills, and give students experiences that require use of both.

University is a preserver of the past in terms of values and outlooks and shared “facts.”

Those who do not know history and have not thought about it, repeat its mistakes use Google, Safari Library or externalized knowledge stores.

.The initial development of revolutionary ideas come from individuals.

Isn’t this the way we should be handing the reins of government, over and over, to the “best and brightest”

That one expert will, one hopes, teach the controversies about the war, rather than simply teaching their own opinions as fact, but there’s still a real danger of creating an intellectual mono culture that might, like genetically modified crops, have a shared vulnerability.

We’ve already got this  (think Tea Party and climate change or evolution).

Educators have a huge problem on their hands as to how to offload their brain empower students to be creators, rather than mere consumers.

Da Vinci today alone cannot build an jet-airplane. The people who designed the microchips, wrote the operative system, made the special glass, and so on weren’t specialists?

Let me tell you the first time as a young man I went to see the Eiffel Tower it was surrounded by pigeons now it’s surrounded by machine guns.

Its time we taught values not just our values, values that we all share and need to live on this plant in Peace.

NATURAL LAW GOVERNS ALL TECHNOLOGY NOW AND IN THE FUTURE

Just in case you are one of those lonely people with 500 friends on Facebook, (most of them you never hear of but promoted by a faceless Facebook prompt) tweets all day long, can’t go anywhere without you smart phone, spend most of your time looking down into LCD screens, Googling , Flip Boarding, never experiencing real cooking, real friendship, real conversation with body language, doesn’t know what true or false, you are on a complex collision with what life is really like.

Now don’t get me wrong I am not against Technological advances but I am somewhat  fearful that we are not seeing as yet a genuine revolution of Technology.  We are creating a world which is not connected but becoming more and more disconnected.  A world of vast inequalities.

What we can do in the world depends on what we can make.

Take for instance the Internet.  Prosperity= Internet.  Poverty=no Internet.

There is no doubt that the world as we ( the older generation) have known it is coming to an end.

The microchip is everywhere and no where.

We are only on the threshold of Technology. It won’t be long before the whole lot will be on your wrist, or in your contact lenses.

With you very own genome map on a DNA chip that will be down loaded to grow replacement new body parts, and analyze your health while sitting on the toilet.   Cant wait! for the Robots with AI.

Before you all get carried away here is a dose of Present Day conflict worldwide.

Realities that are turned into entertainment by the Mass media, before the weather forecast.  Why are there so many.?  Because we are disconnected to the reasons. The present day War in Syria started with a Drought.

AMERICANS:

5 Countries.
25 drug cartels, militias guerrillas, separatist, anarchic groups involved.

Europe:

8 Countries.
68 militias guerrillas, separatist, anarchic groups involved

Middle East:

8 countries.
168 militias guerrillas, separatist, anarchic groups involved.

Asia:

15 Countries;
127 militias guerrillas, separatist, anarchic groups involved.

Africa:

24 Countries:
145 militias guerrillas, separatist, anarchic groups involved

Total 60 Countries: 534 militias guerrillas, separatist, anarchic groups involved.

All the communication technology in the world is worthless if we don’t value life rather than Profit for Profit sake.
