(Six-minute read)

Here is a nation that made its wealth from an Empire that exploited most of the world.

Victoria

It is now leaving the European Union which was set up with the aim of ending the frequent and bloody wars between neighbors.

Reneging on its commitment to spend 0.07% of its gross national income on foreign aid because charity begins at home.

In the middle of a financial meltdown,  turning its self into a parochial country on the world stage.

Agreed a four-year £16.5bn surge in defense spending in the middle of a pandemic, while 1.9 million of its people are relying on a food bank.

Spending around 160 billion to save 30 minutes by rail from London to Birmingham. (Creating around 30,000 temporary jobs.) While by this time next year there is every likelihood that its unemployed will reach 3 million must of which will be under 25 years of age.

Aid is a fundamental reaction of most individuals when they see or hear of someone in need.

This is why we have appeal’s from saving a donkey to save a penguin to save a child to donate to cancer research to donate to the poor to donate blood to relieve famine.

It is true that aid on an individual basis comes in many forms with countries’ government foreign aid reflecting our collective compassion.

It is also true that Aid is sometimes abused both by the recipient and the giver.

Perhaps the toxic environment caused by the excesses of the tabloid media over the last 30 years and now social media has something to do with our harding attitude that Aid starts at home. But with our inability to act as one on climate change we will all have to become better at emergency aid and rather worse at development aid.

Indeed financial aid over the last 30 years or so has proved to be  “an excellent method for transferring money from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries.” However, in the long run when it comes to aiding it’s cheaper to send them the money rather than them having to come to claim it.

Aid politicized economies and therefore it often comes with a price of its own.

Rich nations use aid as a lever to open poor country markets to their products and create beneficial trades with aid amounts being dwarfed by rich country protectionism that denies market access for poor country products.

Britain and the USA only believe in free markets that work in one direction.

Aid may be bilateral and multilateral if it is bilateral happens when: the given is from one country directly to another; and multilateral: when is given by the donor country to an international organization such as the World Bank (WB) or the United Nations Agencies (UNDP, UNICEF, UNAIDS, etc.) which in many cases they are the ones who distribute it among the developing countries.

The proportion is currently about 70% bilateral 30% multilateral, according to the World Bank statistics.

Even though the relationship between globalization, development, poverty, and foreign aid is not always clear, as long as the poorest countries are not integrated to work in their own development process, the world has not benefitted or learned from globalization especially from developed neighbor countries, who can give support in many conditions to work from the same goal, the success of development.

Paradox as aid to Africa has grown, the continent has actually become poorer rather than better off.

Of all the aid given to developing countries the smartphone allowed trade to take place without a middle man, and to know the market price has done more than all the billions.

Trade, not aid, it doesn’t have to mean money all the time.

Trade has a long-term impact on international co-operation.

Trade helps developing countries to maintain their dignity,

Trade establishes a strong impression in the international market,

Trade promotes the economical improvement of the country

Trade requires investment first.

Trade is treated as an inefficient distributor of resources. The benefit of trade is mostly confined to an elite group of people in the country.

Thoughtful aid can de accelerate this process.

It is not so much trade vs aid – but what quality and type of aid are given.

But more importantly for us to see the difference it makes.  We should be aiding poorer countries to do things themselves, not doing things for them.

( See the previous post on the Solution on how to finance and distribute Aid while maintaining the Mantra Charity starts a home.)

It seems the brightest people are no longer attracted to politics.

John Donne wrote in “For Whom the Bell Tolls”: “No man is an island, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

All human contributions appreciated. All like clicks and abuse chucked in the bin.

THE BEADY EYE SAY’S. WE CANNOT AVOID IT. CHANGE IS THE LAW OF LIFE.

(Ten-minute red)

John F Kennedy said ” Those who look only to the past, or the present are certain to miss the future”

We are surrounded by change and it is the one thing that has the most dramatic impact on our lives.

There is no avoiding change it will find you, challenge you and force you to reconsider how to live your life.

Our lives now with the coronavirus are reactionary rather than an activator of change.

It has forced us to step out of our comfort zones and see the realities that need to change. There is no escaping the fact that change is a disruptor but it is the power of our choice that enables us to activate positive changes in our lives.

“Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” George Bernard Shaw.

We all know what we don’t want…

We have been talking about it for years and our consensus is that climate change is happening and the risks are real. There is overwhelming evidence that both current impacts with significant costs and extraordinary future risks to society and natural systems.

That the reality of climate change means that there are climate change impacts we can expect, but we also must consider what might happen, especially the small, but real, chance that we may face abrupt changes with massively disruptive impacts. Moreover, while the public is becoming aware that climate change is increasing the likelihood of certain local disasters, many people do not yet understand that there is a small, but real chance of abrupt, unpredictable and potentially irreversible changes with highly damaging impacts on people around the world.

97% of climate experts have concluded that human-caused climate change is happening.

The sooner we respond, the better off we will be.

We don’t need to debate if the climate is changing anymore. By making informed choices now, we can reduce risks for future generations and ourselves, and help communities adapt to climate change.

Climate change puts the well-being of people of all nations at risk.

The problem is that the world is now and for the foreseeable future will have its attention on the effects of COVID-19 for some time.

When the Pandemic is over, or under control what needs to change in the world.

Think about it for a minute.

There are so many changes that stick out like sore thumb it is impossible to believe that we have tolerated there existence.

So let’s fantasize.

There is such inequality, pain and suffering in the world we could start by ensuring that everyone on the planet should have access to electricity, fresh air, drinking water, green technologies, free education, and decent housing.

The world today is definitely not a paradise. Hunger, abuse, poverty, pollution, and violence are all too common.

Granted, the world never has been, and probably never will be perfect, but that means there’s lots of room for improvement!

If we are going to move forward we need to collaborate and push for policies that complement both sides of the political spectrum. We need to put yourself into another person’s headspace.

We don’t have to take on everything at once, in fact, it’s better if we don’t.

If there is one lesson we can and should learn from the present crises it is this:

When the experts tell us the sky is going to fall if we don’t take action we had better take action or the sky really may fall.

We may be able to prevent the emergence of some new pathogens, but for most, we can only prepare.

We can, however, prevent the looming climate disaster.

We can ensure that emerging Technologies serve us all and not just profit.

We can reform our world organizations.

We can reinvent Nato ( See previous posts)

We can fund the United Nations and the WHO.

We can establish World aid silos fully equipped to handle disasters.

We can with our buying power have a sustainable economy.

So the question is why have we not?

Because no one wants to pay for it.

In fact, no one country or the economy or individual has to.

It can be achieved by making a profit for profit sake pay.  By applying a 0.05% World aid commission on activities that are profit-seeking like Algorithms, High-Frequency Trading, Currency Transactions, Sovereign Wealth Fund accusations, Lottos, Gambling, etc. ( see previous posts)

We can become educated on the issues and what’s being done to address it. Especially now with social media, your message can go viral on the internet, spreading the word even faster. Bring your true, authentic self to every situation.

The crucial first step is getting the forces for change off the ground. Having a roadmap to success is crucial for establishing a sense of trust that the change is possible.

Maybe COVID-19 might save the world it has created a sense of urgency.

A 0.05% WORLD AID COMMISSIONS, High - Frequency Trading, Terrorist.

HIGH FREQUENCY TRADING:  (HFT)

HFT a growing cancer is now a major force in markets across the world:

Financial parasites that are only focused on making money, skimming off incalculable billions from pension and investment funds, damaging national economies in the process.

But does anyone in the world really care that the finance industry has found a new way to fleece the public.

HFT are plundering the world and robbing us all while literally having no value to society.

As the world lurch towards a new technology-driven feudalism, defined by disparities in Wealth and Opportunity they are out of sight out of mind.

The question is how is it possible to inform the big audience that 70% of markets activities are controlled by machines that we will never comprehend?

The free market is based upon the notion that there is equity in price discovery.  Once you have lost that, it is not a free market, it is a controlled market.  Here is a market beyond human control, dominated by super-fast machines running complex computer algorithms that jostled and fight each other at the level of milliseconds, microseconds – and with no meaningful oversight.

Is it facetious to suggest that morality should have a significant impact on the world of trading?

First there’s no turning back on HFT because there are too many implicated interests and morality, it’s something we cannot make a machine understand, or at least not yet.

Computers are essentially calculators, so they don’t do what we want
them to do, in fact, they do what we ordered them to do. In the end, behind a massive smokescreen stocks acquisition there’s always a group of competitors who rule the machine in the best way to get the best incomes.

Nor is there anything ETHICAL? about HFT

They don’t understand if their actions will have influence on the environment which are far away of the price-screens of the parquet.

Some of the most formidable minds in the world were now employed in a technological arms race, a hidden war stalked by million-dollar predator algorithms that could swarm those of the larger, slower players – typically, pension and mutual funds – in the same way a shoal of piranhas might eat an ox, cutting them to shreds and pocketing the profits.

The algorithms at the heart of this world were run not by finance or programming people, but by “quants”: quantum physicists, climate scientists, theoretical mathematicians.

High-frequency traders are even battling for an edge on the trading communication links between London and New York. Remarkably, HFT firms are moving their server farms near to exchange computer to further increase trading speeds.

So What is High Frequency Trading?

High Frequency Trading (HFT) involves the execution of complicated, algorithmic-based trades by powerful computers.

They are capable of wiping trillions in value from Markets as in  the “Flash Crash” of May 2010, in which $1 trillion was wiped off the value of markets in the space of 10 minutes.

The objective of HFT is to take advantage of minute discrepancies in prices and trade on them quickly and in huge quantities. The trades are done at close to the speed of light.  The trades are executed without any human action except for initial programming. In most cases, the trades are executed before individual investors know the quotes of prices, or that the trades happened at all.  This tiny difference in speed enabled the owners of high-speed cables to charge banks and investment companies millions of dollars to gain an edge over their rivals without producing any social benefits whatsoever.

High-frequency traders are preying on investors, and exchanges and brokers were being paid to help them to do it.

For instance, a computer recognizes when one exchange quotes an ask price of one cent more than the quote on another exchange. This computer then trades in extraordinarily large volumes on this information, taking advantage of the arbitrage opportunity in a split second. They have nothing to do with value assessment or creation: the machines’ sole aim was to use speed to game the market.

HFT computers can influence the market for the trader’s own advantage.

Before individual and other investors who do not possess the same sophisticated technology realize, the one-cent spread between the two exchanges is erased and the stock price trades at the same level.

There are now entire hedge funds devoted to this strategy.

HFT accounted for 84% of market activity in the US and almost 60% in Europe.

They are non regulatory as the algos simply mutated.

SO WHERE DOES THIS LEAVES THE REST OF US.

One of the main areas of contention is who the victims of HFT are.

HERE IS AN EDUCATED GUESS. THE POOR.

The reality is that HFT is unlikely to go away – as there’s not much incentive to do so.

WE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO STOP HFT

BUT WE SURE CAN LOBBY OUR OUT OF DATE UNITED NATIONS WITH OUR SOCIAL MEDIA, SMARTPHONES, E MAILS, TWITTERS, AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH –   TO PASS A PEOPLES RESOLUTION’S TO PLACE A 0.05% WORLD AID COMMISSIONS ON ALL HIGH FREQUENCY TRADING.   That’s a worthy goal, but it’s not an easy trick, and likely even harder to pull off.

The impact on the inequalities IN THE WORLD could be huge. (SEE PREVIOUS POSTINGS)

The next time you bid on E BAY remember that  Bid sniper’ software, is placing bids milliseconds before auctions ended.

Some HFT industry participants are now starting to look at using software and language design originally used in the graphics and gaming industry, so cross-overs between technology and finance that may have seemed far-fetched in the past may now actually begin emerging commercially. Robot Trading is around the corner.

High Frequency Trading (HFT) algorithm run every day in Google stock.
