THE BEADY EYE ASKS. WHY ARE WE HUMANS SO DUMB AND INTELLIGENT AT THE SAME TIME?

One of the most fascinating paradoxes of our species.

The same brains that can predict the existence of black holes, build space stations, and compose timeless symphonies will also fall for obvious scams, ignore predictable catastrophes.

This can be an accident.

Will stupidity be the death of us?

Could stupid people doing stupid things cripple or destroy civilization, maybe even cause our extinction?

Is it possible? Likely? Inevitable?

————————-

The combination of unrelenting stupidity with global threats and increasingly powerful new technologies may make a species-level catastrophe unavoidable.

Humans aren’t born “dumb”—we arrive with a remarkably well-stocked hardware kit, but almost none of the software pre-installed.

At birth, an infant’s brain contains roughly 86 billion neurons, but the vast majority of the connections between them haven’t been made yet. Instead of coming pre-loaded with knowledge, we are evolutionarily engineered to be hyper-adaptable learning machines.

An infant’s brain forms more than a million new neural connections every second, driven entirely by sensory input and interaction with the world.

So, rather than needing to “learn how to be dumb,” we start out with a blank slate of immense potential, needing a rich environment, language, and experience to wire ourselves for complex thought.

Without that external input and culture, the hardware never reaches its functional capacity—which is why human development relies so heavily on socialization and education.

—————————

Its a direct byproduct of how our brains evolved and how our environment changed.

Our brains rely on two distinct modes of thinking.

One, it relies on emotional reactions, mental shortcuts (heuristics), and pattern recognition.

Two, it allocates attention to effortful mental operations, such as complex calculations, critical thinking, and formal logic.

System 1 is our default setting because thinking hard consumes enormous amounts of energy (the brain accounts for ~20% of the body’s calorie burn).

To conserve energy, System 1 frequently jumps to conclusions and relies on evolutionary shortcuts—leading to cognitive biases, superstition, and impulsive decisions.

Without System 1, you wouldn’t survive.

It allows you to dodge a falling object in milliseconds, read social cues instantly, or drive a familiar route while listening to audiobooks.

System 2 allows us to deliberate and solve complex problems, but System 1 lets us navigate daily life without suffering mental paralysis.

Our brains were optimized over hundreds of thousands of years for survival in small, nomadic hunter-gatherer bands. In that environment, specific survival traits were adaptive:

Craving high-calorie sugar and fats meant surviving a famine.

Fearing social rejection meant staying part of the tribe (and not dying alone in the wilderness).

Assuming every rustle in the bushes was a predator was safer than assuming it was just the wind.

We brought those exact same survival instincts into a world of hyper-processed food, algorithmic social media, and nuclear weapons.

 The “Dumb” Side:

Our tribal instincts make us intensely susceptible to “us vs. them” politics, fake news, and doomscrolling.

The “Smart” Side:

The very capacity for abstract thought that allowed our ancestors to invent tools and track seasons has expanded exponentially through written language, technology, and science.

As individuals, humans are surprisingly limited.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, you probably wouldn’t know how to build a smartphone—or even forge an iron nail—from scratch.

Humans aren’t dominant because any single individual is an omniscient genius. We dominate because of cultural accumulation. We store knowledge outside our individual bodies—in books, databases, traditions, and institutions.

 Why we are brilliant:

We stand on the shoulders of giants. A teenager today can learn calculus or programming concepts that the smartest ancient philosophers couldn’t have imagined.

When individuals lose trust in collective knowledge or rely entirely on echo chambers, individual cognitive limitations and blind spots take over.

We like to think of our minds as impartial judges weighing evidence to find the truth.

In reality, our cognitive machinery often acts more like a defense lawyer.

We often decide what we want to believe first (for comfort, identity, or social belonging), and then use our high-powered intelligence to invent clever reasons to justify that belief.

Highly intelligent people are sometimes better at rationalizing bad decisions because they are clever enough to build convincing arguments for their own biases.

You might well ask where is common sense in all of this?

What seems like “common sense” to one person depends heavily on cultural background, upbringing, and environment.

A decision that seems completely illogical to an outsider might make sense within a person’s specific context or set of unexamined assumptions.

Common sense is largely built through experience, observation, and learning from mistakes.

Someone who grew up in a very sheltered or specialized environment may never have been exposed to the everyday scenarios that teach practical cause-and-effect thinking.

Common sense” isn’t actually a single innate trait that people either have or don’t have. Instead, what we usually call common sense is a blend of practical reasoning, life experience, and situational awareness.

People with limited knowledge in a specific area often lack the self-awareness to realize what they don’t know.

Because they feel overly confident in their initial judgment, they jump to conclusions without double-checking their logic or considering obvious consequences.

Someone can excel at abstract concepts, math, or theoretical work while struggling with practical, real-world navigation.

Domain-specific expertise doesn’t automatically translate to everyday problem-solving.

As what is called Artificial Intelligence is changing our world there will come a time when we will be paying for intelligence.
